Setup

To attach the Tamron 28-200mm lens to your Sony E-mount camera:

  1. Ensure both the camera and the lens are clean and free of dust.
  2. Align the white index mark on the lens barrel with the white index mark on the camera body.
  3. Mount the lens by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
  4. To detach, press the lens release button on the camera body and turn the lens counter-clockwise.

Operating the Lens

Zooming

Rotate the zoom ring on the lens barrel to adjust the focal length from 28mm (wide-angle) to 200mm (telephoto). The focal length markings are clearly visible on the lens barrel.

Focusing

This lens features an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor for fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance. This makes it ideal for both still photography and video recording, minimizing distracting noise during operation. For manual focusing, switch your camera to MF mode and rotate the focus ring.

Aperture

The lens has a variable maximum aperture of F/2.8 at the 28mm wide-angle end, transitioning to F/5.6 at the 200mm telephoto end. This allows for excellent low-light performance and creative depth-of-field control, especially at wider focal lengths.

Using the Zoom Lock Switch

The lens is equipped with a 'LOCK' switch to prevent unwanted barrel extension during transport. To engage the lock, set the lens to 28mm and slide the switch to the 'LOCK' position. To unlock, simply slide the switch back.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Tamron 28-200mm lens:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the lens barrel. For lens elements, use a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. The front element features a Fluorine Coating, which repels moisture and oil, making it easier to clean.
  • Storage: Store the lens in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. When not in use, attach the front and rear lens caps to protect the elements.
  • Moisture Resistance: The lens features a moisture-resistant construction, offering protection against light rain and splashes. However, it is not waterproof and should not be submerged. Always wipe off any moisture promptly.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping or subjecting the lens to strong impacts. Use the zoom lock switch when transporting the lens to prevent accidental extension.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Tamron 28-200mm lens, consider the following:

  • Distortion and Vignetting: Like many zoom lenses, especially at wider focal lengths, some distortion and vignetting may occur. These optical characteristics can often be corrected using lens profiles in post-processing software (e.g., Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop).
  • Autofocus Issues: Ensure your camera's firmware is up to date, as this can improve lens compatibility and autofocus performance. Check that the lens is securely mounted and that there are no obstructions to the focus mechanism.
  • Lack of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS): This lens does not have built-in OIS. If your camera body lacks in-body image stabilization (IBIS), handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds or longer focal lengths may result in blurry images. Consider using a tripod or monopod for stability in such situations.
