Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your NEX Portable Sewing Machine. Please read all instructions carefully before use to ensure proper function and prevent damage to the machine or injury.
Important Safety Notice:
- Only use either the DC 6V 1200mA power adapter or 4 'AA' batteries. Do not use both simultaneously, as this may damage the machine.
- Ensure the needle is in the highest position before changing stitches to prevent needle breakage.
- Always verify the direction of the needle and thread during winding to avoid thread jamming or improper stitching.

Setup
1. Powering the Machine
The sewing machine can be powered by either the included AC adapter or 4 'AA' batteries (not included). Ensure only one power source is used at a time.
- AC Adapter: Insert the power cord into the DC 6V port on the back of the machine and plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
- Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the machine and insert 4 'AA' batteries, observing correct polarity.

2. Winding the Bobbin
Before you begin sewing, the bobbin needs to be wound with thread.
- Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
- Guide the thread through the thread guide.
- Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
- Wrap the thread around the bobbin a few times manually.
- Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right.
- Turn on the machine to the 'L' (Low) speed setting. The bobbin will start winding.
- Once the bobbin is full, turn off the machine, cut the thread, and push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left.
3. Threading the Machine (Upper Thread)
Proper threading is crucial for correct stitch formation.
- Raise the presser foot lifter.
- Place the thread spool on the spool pin.
- Guide the thread through the first thread guide (1).
- Pass the thread through the tension disc (2).
- Thread the take-up lever (3) from right to left.
- Guide the thread down through the needle bar thread guide (4).
- Thread the needle from front to back. Use the needle threader if available.
- Pull about 4 inches of thread through the needle eye and place it under the presser foot.
4. Installing the Bobbin (Lower Thread)
- Open the bobbin cover plate.
- Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds counter-clockwise.
- Guide the bobbin thread through the tension spring.
- Turn the handwheel counter-clockwise to lower and then raise the needle. This will bring the bobbin thread up through the needle plate.
- Pull both upper and lower threads to the back, under the presser foot.
- Close the bobbin cover plate.

5. Changing Needle and Presser Foot
To change the needle:
- Loosen the needle clamp screw.
- Remove the old needle.
- Insert the new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine. Push it up as far as it will go.
- Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
To change the presser foot:
- Raise the presser foot lifter.
- Press the release lever at the back of the presser foot holder to detach the current presser foot.
- Align the new presser foot with the holder and lower the presser foot lifter until it snaps into place.
Operation
1. Selecting Stitches
Turn the stitch selector dial to choose one of the 12 built-in stitch patterns. Refer to the stitch guide on the machine for visual reference.

2. Adjusting Speed and Reverse Sewing
- Use the speed switch (L/H) to select between low and high sewing speeds.
- To engage reverse sewing, press and hold the reverse button. This function is primarily suitable for straight stitching to reinforce seams.

3. Sewing Buttonholes
The machine supports buttonhole sewing by combining stitch 7 and stitch 8. You may need a specific buttonhole presser foot (often included or sold separately).
- Attach the buttonhole presser foot.
- Select stitch 7 and sew the first side of the buttonhole.
- Stop at the desired length, then select stitch 8 to create the bar tack.
- Switch back to stitch 7 to sew the second side, then finish with stitch 8.
4. Sewing Thick Fabrics
This machine can sew up to 5 layers of thin denim, with a maximum sewing thickness of 2.5mm.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and smooth operation of your sewing machine.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs using a small brush.
- Oiling: Refer to the detailed product manual or manufacturer's guidelines for specific oiling points and frequency.
- Needle Replacement: Replace needles frequently, especially when sewing different fabric types or if the needle becomes dull or bent.
- Storage: Store the machine in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use.
Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine not powering on | Incorrect power source, loose connection, dead batteries. | Ensure only one power source (AC adapter or batteries) is connected. Check connections. Replace batteries if using battery power. |
| Thread jamming or knotting | Improper threading, incorrect bobbin winding, tension issues. | Re-thread the machine completely, ensuring all guides are followed. Re-wind the bobbin correctly. Adjust thread tension. |
| Needle breaking | Incorrect needle size for fabric, bent needle, changing stitch while needle is down. | Use the correct needle for your fabric type. Replace bent needles. Always raise the needle to its highest position before changing stitch patterns. |
| Skipped stitches | Incorrect needle insertion, bent needle, improper threading. | Check needle insertion direction and ensure it's fully inserted. Replace needle. Re-thread the machine. |
