4.2 Adjusting Stitch Length and Width
Use the dedicated dials to adjust the stitch length (up to 4.0 mm) and stitch width (up to 7.0 mm). These adjustments allow for customization of decorative stitches and optimal performance on various fabric types.
4.3 Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
The machine features adjustable presser foot pressure, which is crucial for sewing different fabric thicknesses. Reduce pressure for delicate fabrics to prevent stretching, and increase it for thicker materials to ensure even feeding.
4.4 1-Step Buttonhole
The semi-automatic 1-step buttonhole function simplifies creating buttonholes. Attach the buttonhole foot, select the buttonhole stitch, and the machine will guide you through the process to create perfectly sized buttonholes.
4.5 Using the Free Arm
To use the free arm, slide off the accessory box. The free arm is ideal for sewing tubular items such as cuffs, sleeves, and pant hems, providing easier access and control.
4.6 Retractable Feed Dog
The feed dog can be lowered for darning, free-motion quilting, or embroidery. Consult the main instruction manual for detailed steps on lowering and raising the feed dog.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures smooth operation. Unplug the machine before cleaning. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case. Use a small brush to remove lint and dust from the feed dog area and the bobbin case. Do not use compressed air, as it can push lint further into the machine.
5.2 Oiling
Your Bernette Milan 5 may require occasional oiling. Refer to the full instruction manual for specific oiling points and frequency. Use only high-quality sewing machine oil.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Thread breaks | Incorrect threading, needle bent/dull, tension too high, poor quality thread. | Re-thread the machine, replace needle, adjust tension, use quality thread. |
| Skipped stitches | Incorrect needle for fabric, needle inserted incorrectly, needle bent/dull. | Use correct needle type/size, insert needle correctly, replace needle. |
| Fabric jams | Incorrect presser foot pressure, starting without fabric under foot, pulling fabric. | Adjust presser foot pressure, always start with fabric under foot, guide fabric gently. |
| Uneven stitches | Incorrect tension, inconsistent fabric feeding. | Adjust upper and bobbin thread tension, ensure even fabric feeding. |
