5. Setup
5.1. Device Placement
Place the FortiGate-101F in a secure, well-ventilated area. Ensure sufficient space for cable connections and airflow. If rack-mounting, use the provided rack mount kit and secure the device properly in a standard 19-inch rack.
5.2. Power Connection
Connect one or both power cords to the AC power inputs on the rear panel of the device and then to a grounded electrical outlet. The FortiGate-101F supports dual redundant power supplies for enhanced reliability.
5.3. Network Connections
- WAN Connection: Connect your internet service provider's modem or router to one of the GE RJ45 WAN ports.
- LAN Connection: Connect your internal network switches or devices to the GE RJ45 ports.
- SFP/SFP+ Connections: For fiber optic or high-speed Ethernet connections, insert compatible SFP/SFP+ transceivers into the respective slots and connect fiber or copper cables.
- Console Connection: For initial configuration or direct management, connect a serial cable from your management workstation to the Console port.
5.4. Initial Configuration
After connecting power and network cables, power on the device. Access the device's management interface via the Console port or a web browser using the default IP address (refer to the Quick Start Guide for default credentials and IP). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the initial setup, including setting up network interfaces, administrative passwords, and basic security policies.

6.1. FortiCare and FortiGuard Services
Your FortiGate-101F includes 24x7 FortiCare and FortiGuard Unified (UTM) Protection services. These services provide:
- FortiCare: Technical support, hardware replacement, and firmware updates.
- FortiGuard: Real-time threat intelligence updates for antivirus, intrusion prevention, web filtering, anti-spam, and more.
Ensure your device is registered and these services are active to receive continuous protection and support.

6.2. Management Interface

- IP Configuration: Ensure your workstation has a correct IP address within the same subnet as the FortiGate's management interface, or that DHCP is functioning correctly.
- Firewall Policies: Review your firewall policies to ensure they are not blocking necessary traffic.

- Console Access: Attempt to access the device via the console port to check its status and logs.
- Soft Reboot: If accessible, perform a soft reboot through the management interface.
