MagLite AT3600 Turntable Cartridge and Headshell Instruction Manual

Model: AT3600

1. Introduction

This instruction manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your MagLite AT3600 turntable cartridge and silver headshell. Designed for high-quality audio reproduction, this unit is compatible with various Technics turntable models including SL Q2, SL Q202, SL Q2K, SL Q3, SL Q303, SL Q33, SL Q33K, SL Q3K, and SL H302.

The AT3600 cartridge features a conical diamond stylus and is pre-assembled with a high-quality silver headshell and wiring, ensuring it is ready for immediate use with compatible turntables.

2. Setup

The MagLite AT3600 cartridge and silver headshell assembly is designed for easy installation. Follow these steps to properly attach it to your turntable's tonearm.

2.1 Attaching the Headshell to the Tonearm

  1. Gently hold the headshell by its finger lift.
  2. Align the headshell connector with the tonearm socket. The connector has four pins that must align with the corresponding holes in the tonearm.
  3. Push the headshell firmly into the tonearm socket until it is fully seated.
  4. Rotate the locking collar on the tonearm clockwise to secure the headshell in place. Ensure it is snug but do not overtighten.

2.2 Tonearm Balance and Tracking Force Adjustment

After attaching the headshell, it is crucial to balance your turntable's tonearm and set the correct tracking force for optimal performance and to prevent damage to your records and stylus. Refer to your turntable's instruction manual for specific guidance on balancing the tonearm and adjusting the counterweight. The recommended tracking force for the AT3600 cartridge is 1.5 - 2.5 grams.

Note: Incorrect tracking force can lead to poor sound quality, record wear, and stylus damage.

3. Operation

Once the cartridge and headshell are properly installed and the tonearm is balanced, your turntable is ready for playback.

3.1 Playing Records

  1. Place a record on the turntable platter.
  2. Select the appropriate speed (33-1/3 RPM or 45 RPM) on your turntable. The AT3600 cartridge is compatible with both speeds.
  3. Carefully lift the tonearm using the cueing lever.
  4. Position the stylus over the desired starting groove of the record.
  5. Gently lower the tonearm using the cueing lever. The stylus will make contact with the record, and playback will begin.
  6. At the end of the record, use the cueing lever to lift the tonearm and return it to its rest.

Always use the cueing lever to raise and lower the tonearm to prevent damage to the stylus and records.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity of your cartridge and stylus, and preserves sound quality.

4.1 Stylus Cleaning

  • Clean the stylus regularly using a soft brush designed for stylus cleaning. Brush gently from back to front (from the pivot point towards the stylus tip).
  • Avoid using excessive force or brushing from side to side, as this can damage the stylus cantilever.
  • For stubborn dirt, a specialized stylus cleaning fluid can be used sparingly, following the product's instructions.

4.2 Stylus Replacement

The stylus is a delicate component that wears out over time. A worn stylus can damage your records and degrade sound quality. Replace the stylus when you notice a decrease in sound clarity or after approximately 500-1000 hours of playback, depending on usage and record condition.

  • To replace, carefully grasp the stylus housing and pull it gently downwards and forwards.
  • Align the new stylus housing with the cartridge body and push it upwards until it clicks securely into place.

4.3 General Cartridge Care

  • Keep the cartridge and headshell free from dust and debris.
  • Avoid touching the stylus tip with your fingers.
  • When not in use, ensure the tonearm is secured in its rest and the stylus guard is in place.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your AT3600 cartridge, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No sound or weak sound from one channel Loose connection, damaged wiring, or faulty cartridge. Check headshell-to-tonearm connection. Ensure all four wires are securely connected to the cartridge pins. Inspect wires for damage.
Distorted or muffled sound Dirty or worn stylus, incorrect tracking force, or damaged record. Clean the stylus. Verify tracking force is set between 1.5 - 2.5 grams. Inspect records for damage. Consider stylus replacement.
Skipping or jumping Incorrect tracking force, dirty stylus, or damaged record. Adjust tracking force within the recommended range. Clean the stylus. Ensure the turntable is on a stable, level surface.
Humming or buzzing noise Grounding issue, interference, or loose connections. Ensure the turntable is properly grounded to your amplifier/receiver. Check all audio cable connections. Move away from other electronic devices.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact customer support.
