Introduction

The Dr.meter PH838 is a high-precision pH meter designed for accurate measurement of pH levels in various liquids. It features a sensitive glass electrode sensor, providing precise readings from 0 to 14.0 pH with an accuracy of up to 0.01. This device is equipped with an automatic shutdown function to conserve battery life and a dual-color LCD display for clear visibility and immediate alerts.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity, and values above 7 indicate alkalinity. The Dr.meter PH838 accurately measures across this entire range.

  • Battery Compartment: Located at the top, for AAA batteries.
  • Timer Switch: Activates the automatic shutdown timer.

Setup

  1. Battery Installation: Unscrew the battery compartment cap at the top of the meter. Insert the two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Replace the cap securely.
  2. Electrode Preparation: Remove the protection cap from the bottom of the meter. The sponge inside the cap should be slightly moist to keep the electrode hydrated. If dry, add a few drops of distilled water or potassium chloride (KCL) solution to moisten it.
  3. Initial Rinse: Before first use, rinse the electrode with distilled water.

Operating Instructions

Power On/Off

  • Press the ON/OFF HOLD button to turn the meter on.
  • Press and hold the ON/OFF HOLD button for approximately 3 seconds to turn the meter off.

Calibration (3-Point)

Calibration is crucial for accurate readings. Perform calibration regularly, especially after prolonged storage or if readings appear inconsistent. The meter supports 3-point calibration using pH 4.00, pH 6.86, and pH 9.18 buffer solutions.

  1. Prepare the buffer solutions: Dissolve each calibration powder packet (pH 4.00, pH 6.86, pH 9.18) in 250ml of distilled water. Ensure the solutions are at 25°C (77°F) for optimal accuracy.
  2. Turn on the pH meter.
  3. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and gently blot dry with a clean tissue.
  4. Immerse the electrode into the pH 6.86 buffer solution.
  5. Press and hold the CAL/▲ button until "CAL" appears on the display. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer solution and calibrate. Wait for the reading to stabilize and "END" to appear, indicating successful calibration.
  6. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  7. Immerse the electrode into the pH 4.00 buffer solution.
  8. Press and hold the CAL/▲ button until "CAL" appears. Wait for stabilization and "END".
  9. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  10. Immerse the electrode into the pH 9.18 buffer solution.
  11. Press and hold the CAL/▲ button until "CAL" appears. Wait for stabilization and "END".
  12. Rinse the electrode with distilled water. The meter is now calibrated.

Taking a Measurement

  1. Turn on the pH meter.
  2. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  3. Immerse the electrode into the sample liquid up to the immersion line.
  4. Gently stir the meter and wait for the reading to stabilize on the display.
  5. Record the pH and temperature values.
  6. After use, rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled water and replace the protection cap.

Features

  • Automatic Shutdown: To conserve battery, the meter will automatically power down after 15 minutes of inactivity. A timer icon on the display indicates this feature is active.
  • Dual-color Alarm Display: The LCD display changes color to provide visual alerts.
    • If pH value drops below 3.5, the display turns red (indicating strong acid).
    • If pH value exceeds 12.5, the display turns red (indicating strong base).
    • Otherwise, the display remains white.

  • Data Hold: Press the ON/OFF HOLD button briefly during measurement to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • Backlit LCD Display: The large backlit screen ensures clear data visibility, even in low-light conditions. Press the Backlit/▼ button to toggle the backlight.

Maintenance

  • Electrode Care: The glass electrode is delicate. Handle it with care and avoid testing strong acids, strong alkalis, or high-temperature liquids that could damage it.
  • Keep Electrode Moist: To maintain accuracy and prolong the electrode's lifespan, always ensure the sponge inside the protection cap is moist. Regularly add potassium chloride (KCL) solution to the sponge.
  • Cleaning: After each use, rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled water to remove any residue from the sample. Do not wipe the glass bulb, as this can cause static electricity and damage the sensor.
  • Storage: Store the pH meter with the protection cap securely in place, ensuring the electrode remains moist. Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display or when the meter fails to power on.

Troubleshooting
