MOOG Subharmonicon Semi-Modular Analog Polyrhythmic Synthesizer Instruction Manual

Model: MOD-SUBH

1. Introduction

The MOOG Subharmonicon is a unique semi-modular analog polyrhythmic synthesizer designed for experimental sound creation. It features two Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs), each with two subharmonic generators, creating a rich harmonic foundation. Its dual 4-step sequencers, coupled with four rhythm generators, enable the creation of complex and evolving polyrhythmic patterns. The Subharmonicon can function as a standalone instrument or integrate into a Eurorack system, offering extensive patching possibilities.

4. Setup

4.1 Physical Placement

The Subharmonicon can be used as a tabletop instrument or installed into a 60HP Eurorack system. Ensure stable placement on a flat surface or secure mounting within a Eurorack case.

4.2 Power Connection

  1. Connect the provided power supply to the 12VDC input on the rear panel of the Subharmonicon.
  2. Plug the power supply into a suitable AC outlet. The unit will power on automatically.

4.3 Audio Connections

Connect the AUDIO OUT / 🎧 jack on the rear panel to your mixer, audio interface, or headphones using a standard 1/4-inch TS cable or stereo headphones.

4.4 MIDI Connections

The Subharmonicon supports MIDI input via the included DIN Socket to 3.5mm Plug (Type A) MIDI Adapter. Connect your MIDI controller or interface to the MIDI IN jack on the patchbay using this adapter.

4.5 Initial Patching

The Subharmonicon is internally pre-patched for immediate sound generation. To explore its semi-modular capabilities, use the included patch cables to reroute signals on the 32-point patchbay. Refer to the included Patch Sheet Overlays for suggested starting points.

5. Operating Principles

The Subharmonicon's unique sound is generated through its six tonal sources and polyrhythmic sequencers. Understanding these core components is key to its operation.

5.1 Oscillators (VCOs and Subharmonics)

The unit features two main Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCO 1 and VCO 2). Each VCO has two subharmonic generators (SUB 1 and SUB 2) that produce frequencies derived from the main VCO frequency by integer division. This creates harmonically rich and complex tones. Controls include:

  • VCO FREQ: Adjusts the fundamental frequency of each main oscillator.
  • VCO WAVE: Selects the waveform (square or sawtooth) for each main oscillator.
  • SUB 1/2 FREQ: Sets the division ratio for each subharmonic generator (e.g., 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4).
  • SUB 1/2 LEVEL: Controls the volume of each subharmonic generator.

5.2 Sequencers and Rhythm Generators

Two 4-step sequencers (SEQUENCER 1 and SEQUENCER 2) control the pitch of the oscillators. Four independent rhythm generators (RHYTHM 1-4) determine the timing of these sequencers, allowing for intricate polyrhythmic patterns. Each rhythm generator can be assigned to either sequencer.

  • STEP controls: Adjust the pitch value for each of the four steps in both sequencers.
  • POLYRHYTHM controls: Set the division ratio for each rhythm generator, influencing the timing of sequencer steps.
  • TEMPO: Adjusts the overall playback speed of the sequencers.
  • PLAY/STOP: Starts and stops sequencer playback.

5.3 Filter (VCF) and Amplifier (VCA)

The Subharmonicon features a classic Moog Ladder Filter (VCF) and a Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) to shape the sound.

  • CUTOFF: Sets the filter's cutoff frequency.
  • RESONANCE: Controls the filter's emphasis at the cutoff frequency.
  • VCF EG AMT: Determines the amount of envelope modulation applied to the filter cutoff.
  • VCF ATTACK/DECAY: Shapes the filter envelope.
  • VCA ATTACK/DECAY: Shapes the amplifier envelope.

5.4 Patchbay

The 32-point patchbay allows for extensive signal routing and modulation, both internally and with external Eurorack modules. This expands the sonic possibilities beyond the default internal connections.

5.5 Quantization

The QUANTIZE function ensures that oscillator frequencies are constrained to musical intervals, making it easier to create coherent melodic and harmonic patterns even with complex polyrhythms.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean the Subharmonicon, disconnect it from power. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe down the surface. Avoid abrasive materials or chemical cleaners, which can damage the finish or controls.

6.2 Storage

When not in use, store the Subharmonicon in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If transporting, use appropriate protective casing to prevent damage.

6.3 Firmware Updates

Periodically check the official MOOG website for any available firmware updates. Follow the instructions provided by MOOG for safe and proper installation of updates.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure the power supply is correctly connected and the unit is powered on.
    • Check audio cable connections to your mixer/interface/headphones.
    • Verify that the VOLUME knob is turned up.
    • Confirm that VCO levels and SUB levels are not at zero.
    • If using external patching, ensure all necessary connections are made correctly.
  • Sequencer Not Playing:
    • Press the PLAY button. The PLAY LED should be illuminated.
    • Check the TEMPO knob; ensure it is not set to minimum.
    • If using an external clock, ensure the clock signal is present and correctly patched to the CLOCK IN.
  • Unexpected Sound/Behavior:
    • Review your patch cable connections. Incorrect patching can lead to unusual results.
    • Reset the unit by powering it off and on.
    • Consult the official MOOG Subharmonicon manual or online resources for advanced troubleshooting.
