- Wiring Connections:
Connect the four color-coded wires from the tonearm to the corresponding pins on the back of the cartridge. The standard color code is:
- Red: Right Channel Hot (R+)
- Green: Right Channel Ground (RG-)
- White: Left Channel Hot (L+)
- Blue: Left Channel Ground (LG-)
Ensure connections are firm and secure. Avoid bending the pins.
- Alignment and Tracking Force:
- Alignment: Use a cartridge alignment protractor (often included with turntables or available separately) to ensure the stylus is perfectly aligned with the record grooves. This minimizes distortion and wear.
- Tracking Force: Set the tracking force on your tonearm to 3.0 grams. The acceptable range for this cartridge is 2.5g to 3.5g. Use a digital tracking force gauge for accuracy.
- Anti-Skate: Adjust the anti-skate setting on your tonearm to match the tracking force.
4. Operating Instructions
Once installed and properly aligned, your MagLite M27BS cartridge is ready for use.
- Ensure your turntable is connected to a phono preamplifier or an amplifier with a dedicated phono input.
- Carefully place the record on the platter.
- Gently lower the tonearm onto the record's lead-in groove using the cueing lever. Avoid dropping the tonearm directly onto the record.
- When finished, lift the tonearm using the cueing lever and return it to its rest.
5. Maintenance and Care
Regular maintenance will prolong the life of your cartridge and stylus, and ensure consistent sound quality.
- Stylus Cleaning: Clean the stylus regularly using a soft stylus brush, brushing gently from back to front. Do not use excessive force or brush side-to-side.
- Record Cleaning: Keep your records clean. Dust and debris on records can transfer to the stylus, degrading sound and accelerating wear.
- Stylus Inspection: Periodically inspect the stylus for wear or damage using a magnifying glass. A worn stylus can damage your records.
- Storage: When not in use, ensure the tonearm is secured in its rest and the stylus guard (if available) is in place.
