4. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Retevis RT97 GMRS Repeater:

  1. Antenna Connection: Connect a suitable GMRS antenna to the antenna port on the repeater. Ensure the connection is secure. Note: An antenna is not included with this package and must be purchased separately. The performance of the repeater is highly dependent on the quality and placement of the antenna.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the provided power supply to the repeater's power input port. Plug the power supply into a standard electrical outlet. Alternatively, use the car charger cable for mobile applications.
  3. Placement: Position the repeater in a location that maximizes signal coverage. Higher elevations and clear line-of-sight to the desired communication area are recommended.
  4. Initial Power-On: Once the antenna and power are connected, the repeater will power on. The LCD screen will illuminate, displaying default frequency information.

5. Operating Instructions

The RT97 Repeater operates automatically once properly set up. Here's how to monitor and interact with it:

  • LCD Display: The LCD screen provides real-time information. It typically shows the current channel number, the transmit (TX) frequency, and the receive (RX) frequency.
  • Channel Selection: Use the up/down buttons located below the LCD screen to cycle through the available 16 channels. Each channel corresponds to a specific GMRS frequency pair (TX/RX).
  • Duplex Operation: The built-in duplexer allows the repeater to receive and transmit simultaneously on different frequencies. When a signal is received on the RX frequency, the repeater automatically re-transmits it on the TX frequency, extending the range for your GMRS radios.
  • Compatibility: Ensure your GMRS two-way radios are programmed to the correct GMRS channels and repeater offsets to communicate through the RT97 repeater. Refer to your radio's manual for programming instructions.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your RT97 Repeater, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Regularly wipe the exterior of the repeater with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the LCD screen is kept clean for clear visibility.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the repeater within its specified temperature and humidity ranges. Protect it from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and excessive moisture.
  • Connections: Periodically check all cable connections (antenna, power) to ensure they are secure and free from damage.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the repeater to prevent overheating, especially during continuous operation.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your RT97 Repeater, refer to the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Check if the power supply is securely connected to both the repeater and the electrical outlet.
    • Verify that the electrical outlet is functional.
    • Inspect the power cable for any visible damage.
  • Poor Signal Range or No Repeater Function:
    • Ensure the antenna is properly connected and suitable for GMRS frequencies.
    • Check the antenna's placement; higher and unobstructed locations generally provide better coverage.
    • Verify that your GMRS radios are correctly programmed to use the repeater's frequencies and offset.
    • Confirm that the repeater is powered on and the LCD displays active frequencies.
  • LCD Display Issues:
    • If the display is blank, check power connections.
    • If the display is unreadable, ensure it is clean and free from condensation.
  • Interference:
    • Relocate the repeater away from other electronic devices that may cause interference.
    • Ensure the antenna is not too close to metal structures or other antennas.
