Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Battery Backup & Surge Protector

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your APC BR1500MS Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The BR1500MS is designed to protect your electronic equipment from power outages, surges, and spikes, ensuring continuous power and safeguarding your data.

2. Safety Information

Please read these instructions carefully before installing or operating the UPS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the unit, injury, or electric shock.

  • The UPS contains internal batteries that are not user-serviceable. Refer to qualified service personnel for battery replacement.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode.
  • Do not open or mutilate batteries. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes.
  • Connect the UPS power cable directly to a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or surge protectors with the UPS input.
  • Ensure the UPS is installed in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, or moisture.
  • The UPS is intended for indoor use only.

Front Panel Features:

  • LCD Display: Provides real-time status information such as battery charge, load level, estimated runtime, and various operational modes.
  • Power Button: Used to turn the UPS on or off.
  • Menu/Scroll Buttons: Navigate through the LCD display options.
  • USB Charging Ports (Type-A and Type-C): Provide power for charging mobile devices.

Rear Panel Features:

  • Battery Backup & Surge Protected Outlets: Provide power from the battery during outages and protect against surges.
  • Surge Only Outlets: Provide surge protection only, without battery backup.
  • Data Line Protection (Ethernet/Coaxial): Protects network and cable connections from surges.
  • USB Communication Port: Connects the UPS to a computer for power management software.
  • Circuit Breaker: Resettable overload protection.
  • Building Wiring Fault Indicator: Illuminates if a wiring problem is detected in the wall outlet.

5. Setup

5.1 Initial Placement

Place the UPS on a flat, stable surface in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated indoor area. Avoid placing it near heat sources, direct sunlight, or excessive dust.

5.2 Connecting Equipment

  1. Connect to Wall Power: Plug the UPS power cord directly into a grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or surge protectors.
  2. Connect Battery: The battery may be disconnected for shipping. Refer to the quick start guide or internal instructions to connect the battery terminals if necessary.
  3. Connect Devices to Battery Backup Outlets: Plug critical equipment such as your computer, monitor, and external hard drives into the Battery Backup & Surge Protected outlets. These outlets provide power during an outage.
  4. Connect Devices to Surge Only Outlets: Plug non-critical equipment like printers or scanners into the Surge Only outlets. These outlets provide surge protection but no battery backup.
  5. Connect Data Lines (Optional): If desired, connect your network cable (Ethernet) or coaxial cable through the respective data line protection ports on the rear panel.
  6. Connect USB Communication Cable: Connect one end of the USB cable to the UPS USB port and the other end to your computer. This enables communication for the PowerChute software.

5.3 Initial Power On

After connecting all equipment, press the power button on the front panel to turn on the UPS. The LCD display will illuminate, and the UPS will begin charging its battery.

6. Operating the UPS

6.1 Front Panel Display

The LCD display provides various status indicators. Use the menu buttons to cycle through information such as:

  • Input Voltage
  • Output Voltage
  • Load Percentage
  • Battery Charge Level
  • Estimated Runtime
  • Event Log

6.2 Power On/Off

  • To Turn On: Press and hold the power button until a beep is heard and the LCD illuminates.
  • To Turn Off: Press and hold the power button until a beep is heard and the LCD turns off.

6.3 Battery Backup Operation

During a power outage, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power, providing continuous power to connected equipment on the battery backup outlets. The LCD will indicate 'On Battery' and display the estimated runtime.

6.4 USB Charging Ports

The front panel features USB-A and USB-C charging ports (5V, 3.0A total) for convenient charging of mobile devices, even when the UPS is off (as long as it is connected to wall power).

6.5 PowerChute Personal Edition Software

For advanced power management, install the PowerChute Personal Edition software on your computer. This software allows for:

  • Safe system shutdown during extended power outages.
  • Customizable UPS settings.
  • Energy usage monitoring.
  • Diagnostic capabilities.

Download the latest version from the official APC website.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Replacement

The internal battery typically lasts 3-5 years. When the battery needs replacement, the UPS will indicate a 'Replace Battery' warning on the LCD. Contact APC support or an authorized service center for replacement batteries and instructions. Always use genuine APC replacement batteries.

7.2 Cleaning

Periodically clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and obstructions.

7.3 Storage

If storing the UPS for an extended period, ensure the battery is fully charged, then disconnect it from wall power and store it in a cool, dry place. Recharge the battery every 3-6 months to prevent permanent damage.

8. Troubleshooting

Refer to the table below for common issues and their solutions.
