Installation Steps:

  1. Remove Existing Showerhead: Turn off the water supply. Unscrew your existing showerhead from the shower arm (pipe) by turning it counterclockwise.
  2. Clean Shower Arm Threads: Clean away any debris or old plumber's tape that may be on the threaded portion of the shower arm.
  3. Apply Plumber's Tape (Shower Arm): Wrap the included plumber's tape tightly around the shower arm threads 2 or 3 times to prevent leaking.
  4. Prepare Filter: Unscrew the protective caps from both ends of the Compact Shower Filter (CSF) and discard properly.
  5. Attach Filter to Shower Arm: Screw the CSF onto the shower arm (pipe) clockwise until tight. Hand-tighten first, then use an adjustable wrench to tighten the connection if needed, ensuring not to overtighten.
  6. Apply Plumber's Tape (Filter): Wrap the included plumber's tape tightly around the threads on the CSF's showerhead connection 2 or 3 times.
  7. Re-install Showerhead: Re-install your showerhead by turning it clockwise, by hand, until tight. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the connection if needed, ensuring not to overtighten.

3. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the Brondell VivaSpring Compact Shower Filter operates passively. Water flows through the filter as you shower, providing continuous filtration. There are no active controls or settings to adjust on the filter itself.

Important Operating Notes:

  • Water Pressure: The required supply water pressure for this item is 20-90 psi. Ensure your home's water pressure falls within this range for optimal performance.
  • Initial Flush: Always flush the filter for 2 minutes or until water runs clear after installation or filter replacement.
  • Chloramines: The system has not been evaluated for free available chlorine reduction performance in the presence of chloramines. Performance may be impacted by chloramines. Contact your local water utility to determine if chloramines are used in your water supply.

4. Maintenance

Regular filter replacement is crucial to maintain optimal performance and water quality.

Filter Replacement:

The FF-30 filter cartridge should be replaced every 6 months or after filtering 10,000 gallons of water, whichever comes first.

  1. Turn Off Water: Ensure the water supply to the shower is completely turned off.
  2. Remove Showerhead: Unscrew your showerhead from the filter by turning it counterclockwise.
  3. Remove Filter Housing: Carefully unscrew the two halves of the filter housing.
  4. Replace Cartridge: Remove the old FF-30 filter cartridge and insert a new one, ensuring it is seated correctly.
  5. Reassemble Filter: Screw the two halves of the filter housing back together until hand-tight.
  6. Re-apply Plumber's Tape (if needed): If the existing plumber's tape on the filter's showerhead connection is worn, remove it and apply new tape (2-3 wraps).
  7. Re-attach Showerhead: Screw your showerhead back onto the filter, hand-tightening first, then using an adjustable wrench if necessary.
  8. Flush Filter: Turn on the water and check for leaks. Flush the new filter cartridge by running the shower for 2 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

5. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Leaks at Connections:
    • Ensure plumber's tape was applied correctly and tightly (2-3 wraps).
    • Check that all connections are hand-tight, then use an adjustable wrench for a final snug turn, being careful not to overtighten.
    • Inspect rubber washers for proper seating and damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Reduced Water Pressure:
    • Ensure your home's water pressure is within the recommended 20-90 psi range.
    • A clogged filter cartridge can reduce water flow. If the filter is old, consider replacing it.
    • Ensure the filter was flushed for the recommended 2 minutes after installation/replacement.
  • Water Not Running Clear:
    • This is normal for a new filter. Continue flushing for a few more minutes until the water runs completely clear.
  • No Improvement in Water Quality:
    • Verify the filter cartridge is installed correctly and is not past its lifespan.
    • Note that the filter is designed to reduce specific contaminants (chlorine, lead, mercury). It may not address all water quality issues.
    • If chloramines are present in your water, the free available chlorine reduction performance may be impacted.
