DENON PMA-2000IIR Integrated Amplifier User Manual

Model: PMA-2000IIR

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your DENON PMA-2000IIR Integrated Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the unit and keep it for future reference. The PMA-2000IIR is designed to deliver high-fidelity audio performance, building upon the acclaimed PMA-2000 series with enhanced sound quality and robust construction.

2. Safety Instructions

To prevent electric shock, fire, and damage to the unit, observe the following safety precautions:

  • Do not expose this unit to rain or moisture.
  • Do not remove the cover. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Ensure proper ventilation; do not block ventilation openings.
  • Connect the unit to an AC 100V, 50/60Hz power supply only.
  • Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the unit.
  • Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it will be unused for long periods.

3. Product Overview

The DENON PMA-2000IIR is an integrated amplifier engineered for superior audio reproduction. Key features include:

  • UHC-MOS High-Current Amplification: The output stage utilizes UHC-MOS (Ultra High Current MOS) elements, providing a peak current supply capability of 120A, significantly higher than conventional designs, for powerful and dynamic sound.
  • Advanced Power Supply: Features a newly developed power transformer with high-current, ultra-high-speed rectifier diodes. The core lamination thickness is approximately 20% greater, and the winding cross-sectional area is about 40% larger compared to the PMA-2000, reducing operating resistance.
  • Precision Mechanical Ground Construction: This design minimizes interference from internal vibrations. Radiators, damped by elastic rubber and stabilizers, are directly attached to the bottom near newly developed high-damping feet, isolating the power transformer and other vibration sources.
  • Precision Signal Ground Circuit: Suppresses noise signal inflow from constant current circuits and filters out currents other than the intended signal, ensuring signal purity.
  • Twin-Monaural & 6-Block Structure: To prevent sound degradation from mutual circuit interference and noise, the power amplifier blocks are configured independently for left and right channels (twin-monaural). The unit also employs a 6-block structure, separating circuits with different signal levels.
  • High-Quality Phono Equalizer: The phono equalizer section features a discrete first-stage circuit utilizing low-noise FETs for optimal vinyl playback.
  • Premium Components: Incorporates selected high-quality parts, including power radiators with improved heat dissipation (20% thicker base with black anodizing), a dedicated transformer for control systems, OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper) internal wiring, inert gas-sealed relays, and high-quality carbon resistors/capacitors.
  • Bi-wiring Speaker Terminals: Equipped with large, brass-machined speaker terminals compatible with bi-wiring configurations, along with an AC inlet type power cord.
  • Pre-out Terminals: Provides pre-out terminals for system expansion.

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Placement

  • Carefully remove the amplifier from its packaging.
  • Place the unit on a stable, level surface with adequate ventilation. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
  • Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for proper heat dissipation.

4.2 Connecting Speakers

  • Connect your speakers to the SPEAKER A or SPEAKER B terminals on the rear panel. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
  • For bi-wiring, connect compatible speakers to both A and B terminals, ensuring the bi-wiring load impedance is within 4-16Ω.
  • The amplifier supports speaker loads of 4-16Ω for A or B, and 8-16Ω for A+B.

4.3 Connecting Audio Sources

  • Connect your audio sources (CD player, turntable, etc.) to the appropriate input terminals (e.g., CD, TUNER, PHONO) on the rear panel using RCA cables.
  • For turntables, connect to the PHONO MM or PHONO MC input depending on your cartridge type.

4.4 Power Connection

  • Connect the supplied power cord to the AC INLET on the rear panel and then to a wall outlet (AC 100V, 50/60Hz).
  • The unit also provides switched (max 120W total) and unswitched (max 240W) power outlets for other audio components.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

  • Press the POWER button on the front panel to turn the unit on or off.

5.2 Input Selection

  • Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob or buttons on the front panel to choose your desired audio source (e.g., CD, PHONO, TUNER).

5.3 Volume Control

  • Adjust the VOLUME knob to set the desired listening level. Start with a low volume and gradually increase it.

5.4 Tone Control

  • Use the BASS and TREBLE knobs to adjust the low and high frequencies to your preference.
  • Bass: ±8dB at 100Hz.
  • Treble: ±8dB at 10kHz.

5.5 Source Direct Function

  • Engage the Source Direct function to bypass tone controls and other processing circuits for the purest audio signal path.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

  • Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
  • Ensure the unit is unplugged before cleaning.

6.2 Ventilation

  • Regularly check that the ventilation openings are not obstructed by dust or other materials.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
