Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your DEWALT 20V MAX XR Cordless Drill Combo Kit, model DCK299D1W1. This kit includes a DCD998 20V MAX XR 1/2-inch 3-Speed Hammer Drill and a DCF887 20V MAX XR 1/4-inch 3-Speed Impact Driver, along with two lithium-ion batteries (8.0Ah and 2.0Ah) and a fast charger. Setup

1. Battery Charging

Before first use, fully charge both lithium-ion batteries. The DCB118 Fast Charger is compatible with 20V MAX* batteries and FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX* batteries. The charge rate is 8 amps for premium batteries and 4 amps for compact batteries.

  1. Connect the charger to a standard power outlet.
  2. Slide the battery pack onto the charger until it clicks into place.
  3. The charging indicator light will illuminate. Refer to the charger's specific manual for light patterns indicating charging status.
  4. Once fully charged, remove the battery from the charger.

2. Attaching Batteries to Tools

To attach a battery, align the battery pack with the tool's battery port and slide it in until it locks securely. To remove, press the release button on the battery and slide it out.

3. Installing Accessories (Hammer Drill)

  1. Ensure the tool is off and the battery is removed.
  2. Rotate the chuck counter-clockwise to open the jaws.
  3. Insert the drill bit or accessory into the chuck.
  4. Rotate the chuck clockwise to tighten the jaws securely around the accessory.
  5. The DCD998 features a heavy-duty 1/2-inch ratcheting nitro-carburized metal chuck with carbide inserts for superior bit gripping strength.

4. Installing Accessories (Impact Driver)

  1. Ensure the tool is off and the battery is removed.
  2. Pull the 1/4-inch hex chuck collar forward.
  3. Insert the hex shank accessory (e.g., screwdriver bit) into the chuck.
  4. Release the collar to lock the accessory in place.

  • Power Detect Technology: When used with high-capacity XR batteries (like the included 8.0Ah battery), the DCD998 maximizes performance, delivering up to 29% more power compared to using a DCB205 battery.
  • 3-Speed Transmission: The hammer drill features a 3-speed, high-performance, all-metal transmission. Select the appropriate speed for the task:
    • Speed 1: Lower speed, higher torque for heavy-duty drilling and driving.
    • Speed 2: Medium speed for general drilling and driving.
    • Speed 3: High speed for fast drilling in lighter materials.
  • Clutch Settings: The DCD998 has 11 clutch settings to prevent overdriving screws and damaging materials. Rotate the clutch collar to the desired setting. For drilling, set the collar to the drill icon.

  • Hammer Mode: For drilling into masonry materials, engage the hammer mode by rotating the collar to the hammer icon.
  • LED Work Light: The DCD998 features a 3-mode LED with a spotlight mode for a 20-minute shutoff function, allowing for extended work time in dark or confined spaces.

DCF887 Impact Driver

  • 3-Speed with Precision Drive: The DCF887 offers three speed settings, including a Precision Drive mode, to optimize torque and speed for various applications.
    • Precision Drive: For delicate fastening applications, preventing overtightening and material damage.
    • Speed 2: Medium speed for general fastening.
    • Speed 3: High speed for maximum torque (1,825 in-lbs) and fast driving (0-3,250 RPM, 0-3,600 impacts per minute).
  • Compact and Lightweight: Its compact size (5.3-inch front-to-back length) and lightweight design (3.4 lbs) make it suitable for working in confined spaces.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your tools.

  • Cleaning: Keep ventilation openings clear of dust and debris. Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the tool's exterior. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.
  • Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store batteries in a discharged state for extended periods.
  • Chuck Maintenance (Hammer Drill): Periodically inspect the chuck jaws for wear. Clean any debris from the chuck mechanism.
