Operating Instructions
DCD998 Hammer Drill/Driver

Figure 5: DCD998 Hammer Drill/Driver features.
- Power Detect Technology: When used with high-capacity XR batteries (like the included 8.0Ah battery), the DCD998 maximizes performance, delivering up to 29% more power compared to using a DCB205 battery.
- 3-Speed Transmission: The hammer drill features a 3-speed, high-performance, all-metal transmission. Select the appropriate speed for the task:
- Speed 1: Lower speed, higher torque for heavy-duty drilling and driving.
- Speed 2: Medium speed for general drilling and driving.
- Speed 3: High speed for fast drilling in lighter materials.
- Clutch Settings: The DCD998 has 11 clutch settings to prevent overdriving screws and damaging materials. Rotate the clutch collar to the desired setting. For drilling, set the collar to the drill icon.

DCF887 Impact Driver
- 3-Speed with Precision Drive: The DCF887 offers three speed settings, including a Precision Drive mode, to optimize torque and speed for various applications.
- Precision Drive: For delicate fastening applications, preventing overtightening and material damage.
- Speed 2: Medium speed for general fastening.
- Speed 3: High speed for maximum torque (1,825 in-lbs) and fast driving (0-3,250 RPM, 0-3,600 impacts per minute).
- Compact and Lightweight: Its compact size (5.3-inch front-to-back length) and lightweight design (3.4 lbs) make it suitable for working in confined spaces.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your tools.
- Cleaning: Keep ventilation openings clear of dust and debris. Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the tool's exterior. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.
- Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store batteries in a discharged state for extended periods.
- Chuck Maintenance (Hammer Drill): Periodically inspect the chuck jaws for wear. Clean any debris from the chuck mechanism.
- General Inspection: Regularly check for loose screws, damaged cords (if applicable to charger), or worn parts. Have any damaged parts repaired by a qualified service technician.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tool does not start | Battery not charged or improperly inserted. | Ensure battery is fully charged and securely inserted. |
| Reduced power/performance | Battery charge is low; incorrect speed/clutch setting. | Recharge battery; adjust speed or clutch setting for the task. |
| Chuck not holding bit (Hammer Drill) | Bit not inserted correctly; chuck jaws worn or dirty. | Reinsert bit and tighten chuck firmly; clean chuck jaws. If wear is significant, seek service. |
| Impact driver bit wobbles | Bit not fully seated in hex chuck. | Pull collar forward, reinsert bit fully, and release collar. |
If problems persist, contact DEWALT customer service or an authorized service center.
