Setup and Installation
The Broan-NuTone 744L is designed for new construction and features adjustable mounting brackets for easy installation between 2" x 8" ceiling joists. The housing dimensions are 12.75"D x 6.88"W x 8.25"H.
1. Preparing the Installation Area
Ensure adequate space in the ceiling for the unit. The fan requires 4-inch ducting for proper ventilation. Plan your ducting route to the exterior of the building.
2. Mounting the Housing
Position the fan housing between ceiling joists. Use the adjustable mounting brackets to secure the housing firmly. Ensure the unit is level before final fastening.

3. Electrical Wiring
Connect the electrical wiring according to local codes and the provided wiring diagram. The unit can be wired to allow independent control of the fan and light functions using separate switches, or both can be controlled by a single switch. For installation over bathtubs or showers, ensure the circuit is GFCI protected.
4. Ducting Connection
Connect the 4-inch ductwork to the fan's exhaust port. Ensure all connections are sealed to prevent air leakage and maintain efficiency.
5. Installing the Light Bulb and Trim
The fixture uses a 75-watt incandescent bulb (R30, BR30, PAR30L, or PAR30LN). Insert the bulb into the socket. Then, attach the recessed light trim to the fan housing, ensuring it sits flush with the ceiling.

Operating Instructions
1. Selecting Airflow (CFM)
The Broan-NuTone 744L offers selectable airflow settings of 50 or 80 Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM). This setting is typically chosen during installation based on room size. Refer to the installation guide for instructions on how to set the desired CFM.
2. Fan Operation
Once installed, the fan operates quietly with a noise level between 0.3 and 2.0 sones, depending on the selected CFM. Activate the fan using the wall switch connected during installation. For optimal humidity control, consider using a humidity-sensing wall switch (sold separately) that automatically turns the fan on and off as needed.
3. Light Operation
The integrated incandescent light is controlled by the wall switch connected during installation. If wired independently, the light can be operated separately from the fan. If wired together, both will activate simultaneously.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your ventilation fan.
1. Cleaning the Grille and Light Trim
Periodically clean the exterior grille and light trim with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the unit is turned off at the circuit breaker before cleaning.
2. Light Bulb Replacement
To replace the incandescent light bulb, first ensure the power is off at the switch and circuit breaker. Carefully remove the light trim, unscrew the old bulb, and replace it with a new 75-watt R30, BR30, PAR30L, or PAR30LN bulb. Reattach the trim securely.
3. Motor and Fan Blade Cleaning
For deeper cleaning of the motor and fan blades, it is recommended to consult a qualified technician. The motor is permanently lubricated and does not require additional oiling.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your Broan-NuTone 744L fan, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Fan does not operate: Check if the circuit breaker is tripped or if the wall switch is in the 'ON' position. Ensure all electrical connections are secure.
- Light does not turn on: Verify the light bulb is properly seated and not burnt out. Check the wall switch and circuit breaker.
- Reduced airflow or excessive noise: Ensure the grille is clean and free of obstructions. Check for blockages in the ductwork. Verify that the fan housing is securely mounted and that the fan blades are not obstructed.
- Excessive humidity in the room: Confirm the fan is operating at the correct CFM for the room size. Ensure the fan is running for an adequate duration after showering or bathing.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact customer support.
