Safety Precautions

  • Always disconnect the power cord from the outlet before cleaning or servicing the unit.
  • Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture to prevent fire or electric shock.
  • Avoid placing the unit in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the unit.
  • Do not attempt to repair the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

Setup

1. Unpacking and Placement

  1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Place the turntable on a stable, level surface away from vibrations and direct sunlight.
  3. Ensure adequate space for ventilation.

2. Turntable Assembly

  1. Place the platter onto the spindle.
  2. Place the felt mat or rubber mat on the platter.

3. Cartridge Installation (Cartridge Sold Separately)

The DENON DP-55L does not include a cartridge. You will need to purchase and install a suitable cartridge separately.

  1. Attach your chosen cartridge to the headshell.
  2. Connect the headshell to the tonearm.
  3. Adjust the tracking force using the counterweight. The recommended tracking force is typically specified by the cartridge manufacturer (e.g., 1 rotation = 2.5g, 1 mark = 0.1g for adjustment).
  4. Set the anti-skating mechanism according to the tracking force.
  5. Adjust the tonearm height if necessary (approximately 5mm adjustment range).

4. Connecting to an Amplifier

  1. Connect the audio output cables from the turntable to the PHONO input of your amplifier.
  2. Ensure your amplifier has a PHONO input (pre-amplifier) or use an external phono pre-amplifier.
  3. Connect the ground wire from the turntable to the ground terminal on your amplifier to minimize hum.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Playback

  1. Place a record on the platter.
  2. Select the appropriate speed (33 1/3 or 45 rpm) using the speed selector switch.
  3. Press the START button. The platter will begin to rotate, and the tonearm will automatically lift and move to the lead-in groove of the record.
  4. The non-contact auto-lift mechanism will gently lower the stylus onto the record.

2. Stopping Playback

  1. To stop playback, press the STOP button.
  2. The tonearm will automatically lift, return to its rest position, and the platter will stop rotating.
  3. The non-contact end detection electronic servo auto-lift ensures the tonearm lifts at the end of the record.

3. Manual Operation

While the DP-55L features automatic functions, you can also operate it manually:

  • Use the tonearm lift lever to manually raise and lower the tonearm.
  • Gently guide the tonearm to the desired position on the record.
  • Lower the tonearm using the lift lever.

4. Speed Selection

The turntable supports two speeds: 33 1/3 RPM and 45 RPM. Select the appropriate speed for your record using the speed selector switch located on the unit.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Unit

  • Wipe the cabinet and dust cover with a soft, dry cloth.
  • For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and then dry thoroughly.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or alcohol, as these can damage the finish.

2. Stylus Care

  • Regularly clean the stylus using a soft brush designed for stylus cleaning, brushing from back to front.
  • Replace the stylus when it shows signs of wear (typically after 500-1000 hours of play) to prevent damage to your records.

3. Record Care

  • Keep records clean and free of dust. Use a record brush before each play.
  • Store records vertically in their sleeves to prevent warping.
