- Temperature Reading: Displays the measured surface temperature.
- Emissivity (Ξ΅): Adjustable from 0.1 to 1.0 for accurate readings on different materials.
- Unit Selection: Switch between Celsius (β) and Fahrenheit (β).
- Backlight: Illuminates the display for use in low-light conditions.
- Data Hold: Freezes the current temperature reading on the display.
- Auto Power Off: Automatically turns off the device after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.
- MAX/MIN/AVG: Displays maximum, minimum, or average temperature readings during a measurement session.
- HIGH/LOW Temp Alarm: Alerts the user when the measured temperature exceeds or falls below preset thresholds.
- Flashlight: Provides illumination for the target area.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The AP-985B requires one 9V (6F22) battery for operation. Follow these steps to install or replace the battery:
- Locate the screw holes on the handle of the thermometer.
- Loosen the screw and pull down the battery door.
- Insert a new 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery door and tighten the screw.

A low battery indication will appear on the display when the power is low, signaling that the battery needs replacement.
5. Operation
5.1 Basic Measurement
To measure temperature, aim the thermometer at the target surface and press the trigger. The dual laser pointers will indicate the measurement area. The temperature reading will appear on the LCD screen almost instantly (response time <250 ms).

5.2 Changing Temperature Units (β/β)
Press the ββ/ββ button to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature units.
5.3 Adjusting Emissivity
Emissivity (Ξ΅) is a measure of an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Different materials have different emissivity values. For accurate measurements, adjust the emissivity setting (0.1 to 1.0) to match the target material. Consult an emissivity table for common materials if needed. Use the βMODEβ button to enter emissivity adjustment mode, then use the ββ/UPβ and ββ/DNβ buttons to change the value.
5.4 MAX/MIN/AVG Modes
While taking measurements, press the βMODEβ button repeatedly to cycle through MAX (maximum), MIN (minimum), and AVG (average) temperature readings recorded during the current measurement session.
5.5 High/Low Temperature Alarms
The AP-985B allows you to set high and low temperature alarm thresholds. If the measured temperature exceeds the high alarm setting or falls below the low alarm setting, the device will emit an audible beep and display βHIβ or β LOWβ on the LCD screen.

Image: Visual representation of the high and low temperature alarm features. The display shows 'HI' with a beeping icon when the temperature exceeds the set limit, and 'LOW' with a beeping icon when it falls below the set limit.
To set alarms: Use the βMODEβ button to navigate to the alarm setting. Use the ββ/UPβ and ββ/DNβ buttons to adjust the desired high or low temperature threshold.
5.6 Backlight and Flashlight
Press the backlight/flashlight button to turn on or off the display backlight or the integrated flashlight for improved visibility in dark environments.
6. Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water. Keep the lens clean for accurate readings.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Refer to Section 4.1 for instructions.
- Storage: Store the thermometer in its zippered carrying case in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display/Device won't turn on | Dead or incorrectly installed battery | Replace the 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings | Incorrect emissivity setting; Dirty lens; Distance to spot ratio exceeded; Target too small | Adjust emissivity for the target material. Clean the lens. Ensure the target fills the measurement spot at the given distance. |
| Laser not visible | Laser function off; Bright ambient light | Check if the laser is enabled. Use in less bright conditions if necessary. |
| Alarm not triggering | Alarm thresholds not set correctly; Alarm function disabled | Verify high/low alarm settings. Ensure the alarm function is active. |
