3. Setup and First Use

3.1 Initial Lens Preparation

New dive masks often have a thin silicone film on the inside of the lens from the manufacturing process, which can cause fogging. To prevent this:

  1. Apply a small amount of non-abrasive white toothpaste (not gel) to the inside of the lens.
  2. Gently rub the toothpaste over the entire inner surface of the lens with your finger for several minutes.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove all toothpaste residue.
  4. Alternatively, use a commercial mask defogger or a mild soap solution before each dive.

3.2 Fitting the Mask

Proper fit is crucial for comfort and to prevent leaks:

  1. Place the mask gently on your face without the strap, ensuring your nose is centered in the nose pocket.
  2. Inhale gently through your nose. The mask should suction to your face and stay in place without holding it.
  3. If the mask does not seal, try adjusting its position or consider if it is the right fit for your face shape.
  4. Once a good seal is achieved, place the strap over the back of your head, above your ears.
  5. Adjust the strap tension using the quick-release buckles. The strap should be snug enough to hold the mask in place, but not overly tight, as this can cause discomfort and leaks.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Donning the Mask

Before entering the water, ensure your hair is clear of the mask skirt to prevent water entry. Place the mask on your face, ensuring the skirt forms a complete seal around your face. The strap should rest comfortably on the back of your head.

4.2 Clearing Water from the Mask

If water enters the mask during a dive:

  1. Press the top of the mask frame firmly against your forehead.
  2. Exhale slowly and forcefully through your nose. The air will push the water out from the bottom of the mask skirt.
  3. Repeat if necessary until the mask is clear.

4.3 Equalization

The nose pocket allows for easy equalization of pressure in your ears and sinuses. Pinch your nose through the flexible nose pocket and gently blow through your nose to equalize as you descend.

5. Maintenance and Care

Proper care extends the life of your dive mask:

  • Rinsing: After each use, thoroughly rinse the mask with fresh, clean water to remove salt, chlorine, and sand.
  • Drying: Allow the mask to air dry completely in a cool, shaded area, away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade silicone and plastic components.
  • Storage: Store the mask in its original plastic storage case or a protective bag to prevent scratches and damage. Avoid storing with other gear that could cause pressure or deformation.
  • Avoid Chemicals: Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or petroleum-based products for cleaning, as these can damage the silicone skirt and lens.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the mask for any signs of wear, tears in the skirt, or damage to the strap or buckles. Replace damaged components as needed.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Mask Fogging

  • Ensure initial lens preparation (Section 3.1) was performed thoroughly.
  • Apply a commercial anti-fog solution or a small amount of saliva to the inside of the lens before each dive, then rinse lightly.

6.2 Mask Leaking

  • Check for hair caught under the mask skirt. Even a single strand can break the seal.
  • Ensure the mask strap is not too tight. Overtightening can distort the skirt and cause leaks.
  • Verify the mask is centered on your face and the skirt is not folded or creased.
  • Facial hair (beards, mustaches) can interfere with the seal. Consider applying a thin layer of silicone grease to the facial hair where the skirt makes contact.

6.3 Discomfort

  • Loosen the mask strap. The mask should be held in place by suction, not excessive strap tension.
  • Adjust the position of the mask on your face to find the most comfortable fit.
