6. Z-Wave Hub Setup and Pairing

The ZEN30 800LR requires a compatible Z-Wave hub for smart control. Compatible hubs include Home Assistant, Hubitat, SmartThings (with custom device driver), and Z-Box Hub. Smart speakers like Alexa are not Z-Wave controllers and require a Z-Wave hub for integration.

6.1. SmartStart Inclusion (Recommended)

If your Z-Wave hub supports SmartStart, you can easily add the device by scanning the QR code on the switch or its packaging using your hub's app. The device will automatically include into your network once powered on.

6.2. Manual Inclusion

To manually include the device into your Z-Wave network:

  1. Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion mode.
  2. Tap the upper paddle of the dimmer switch three times quickly.
  3. The LED indicator will confirm successful inclusion.

7. Operation

7.1. Manual Control

  • Dimmer (Upper Paddle): Press the upper paddle to turn the light on/off. Press and hold to adjust brightness. Double-tap for full brightness.
  • Relay (Lower Button): Press the lower button to turn the connected device (e.g., fan) on/off.

7.2. Smart Control via Z-Wave Hub

Once paired with a Z-Wave hub, you can control both the dimmer and relay remotely through your hub's interface or integrated smart assistants. The switch also supports advanced scene control:

  • Multi-Tap for Scenes: Both the dimmer paddle and the relay button can be configured for multi-tap actions (e.g., double-tap, triple-tap) to trigger specific scenes or control other Z-Wave devices. This functionality depends on your hub's support for advanced scene input.

8. Advanced Configuration (Parameters)

The ZEN30 800LR offers extensive customization through Z-Wave parameters, accessible via your compatible Z-Wave hub (e.g., Hubitat, Home Assistant). These parameters allow you to fine-tune the switch's behavior:

  • LED Indicator Mode & Color: Configure the behavior (on/off with switch, always on/off) and color (e.g., green) of the LED indicators for both the dimmer and relay.
  • Dimmer Brightness: Set minimum and maximum brightness levels, and define custom brightness when turned on.
  • Ramp Rate & Dimming Speed: Adjust how quickly the light dims up or down.
  • Auto Turn-Off/Turn-On Timers: Set timers for automatic operation of the dimmer or relay.
  • Paddle Orientation: Adjust if needed.
  • Smart Bulb Mode: Enable specific modes for smart bulbs connected to the dimmer or relay.
  • Behavior After Power Failure: Configure whether the dimmer/relay restores to its last state or a default state after a power outage.

9. Maintenance

The Zooz ZEN30 800LR Double Switch is designed for minimal maintenance. Keep the device clean and free from dust. Do not attempt to open or repair the device, as it contains no user-serviceable parts and doing so will void the warranty.

10. Troubleshooting

  • Device Not Responding: Ensure the circuit breaker is on and the device is receiving power. Verify Z-Wave network connectivity. Try power cycling the switch by turning off the breaker for 30 seconds and then turning it back on.
  • Inclusion Failure: Ensure your Z-Wave hub is in inclusion mode. Try moving the hub closer to the switch during the pairing process. If using manual inclusion, ensure you are tapping the paddle three times quickly.
  • Lights Flickering/Not Dimming Correctly: Verify that the connected bulbs are dimmable LEDs or incandescent bulbs within the specified wattage limits. Non-dimmable bulbs will not function correctly with the dimmer. Adjust the minimum brightness parameter in your Z-Wave hub settings if flickering occurs at low levels.
  • Fan Not Operating: Ensure the fan is connected to the relay (lower button) and not the dimmer. Verify the fan's power requirements are within the 15A limit of the relay.
  • No 3-Way Functionality: The ZEN30 does not support direct 3-way wiring with standard switches. For 3-way control, a virtual 3-way setup using a compatible Z-Wave hub and another smart switch is required.
  • Custom Driver for SmartThings: If using SmartThings, a custom device driver may be required for full functionality. Refer to the Zooz support page for details.
