4.3 Installing Drill Bits
Twist the chuck counter-clockwise to open the jaws. Insert the drill bit fully into the chuck. Twist the chuck clockwise to tighten the jaws securely around the bit. Ensure the bit is centered and firmly held before operation.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off and Speed Control
The drill is activated by pressing the variable speed trigger. The speed of the drill is controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the trigger. Releasing the trigger will turn the drill off. The integrated LED light will illuminate when the trigger is pressed, providing visibility to the work surface.
5.2 Forward/Reverse Operation
A forward/reverse button is located above the trigger. Push the button to the left for forward rotation (drilling/driving screws in) and to the right for reverse rotation (removing screws). Center the button for the trigger lock position to prevent accidental starting.
5.3 Mode Selection (Drill/Hammer Drill)
The DCD778C2 features a mode selector ring located behind the chuck. Rotate the ring to select between drilling mode (for wood, metal, plastic) and hammer drill mode (for masonry, concrete, brick). Ensure the desired mode is firmly engaged before beginning work.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the ventilation slots of the drill to prevent overheating. Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust and debris. Do not use water or chemical cleaners.
6.2 Battery Care and Storage
Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, charge batteries to approximately 50% capacity. Avoid fully discharging batteries before recharging to prolong their lifespan.
6.3 General Inspection
Periodically inspect the drill for any signs of damage, loose screws, or worn parts. Ensure the chuck operates smoothly and securely. If any issues are found, discontinue use and contact DEWALT service for repair.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Drill Not Starting
- Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly inserted.
- Check if the forward/reverse switch is in the center (locked) position. Move it to either forward or reverse.
7.2 Reduced Power or Runtime
- Recharge the battery.
- Ensure the battery is not old or damaged; consider replacing if performance continues to degrade.
- Verify that the correct mode (drill or hammer drill) is selected for the material.
7.3 Overheating
- Clear any obstructions from the ventilation slots.
- Avoid continuous heavy-duty use without breaks.
- Ensure the drill bit is sharp and appropriate for the material.
