Model: LC150RD

1. Product Overview

The Red Devil LC150RD12 Fire Stop Sealant is an intumescent product designed for firestopping various applications in commercial and residential construction. It effectively seals penetration openings to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, gases, and water. This sealant expands up to 10 times its original size, ensuring a tight seal without shrinkage in most applications. It is tested to ASTM E814 (UL1479) and meets Class A finish requirements for Flame Spread and Smoke Development per ASTM E84 (UL723), providing up to a 2-hour fire rating.

The LC150RD sealant also offers excellent sound attenuation properties and adheres to most common construction and penetrant materials. It is safe for use with most plastics, is low VOC, and is made in the USA. This product is paintable with non-solvent paints once fully cured and is suitable for both interior and exterior use, cleaning up easily with soap and water.

  • Ventilation: Use in a well-ventilated area. If adequate ventilation is not available, use appropriate respiratory protection.
  • Eye Protection: Wear safety glasses or goggles to prevent eye contact.
  • Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clothing to avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact.
  • Ingestion: Do not ingest. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Disposal: Dispose of unused product and empty containers according to local regulations.

3. Setup and Preparation

3.1 Surface Preparation

For optimal adhesion and performance, ensure the application surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, oil, and loose debris. Remove any old caulk or sealant residues. Porous surfaces may benefit from light sanding and cleaning.

3.2 Cartridge Preparation

  1. Cut the tip of the nozzle at a 45-degree angle to the desired bead size.
  2. Puncture the inner seal at the base of the nozzle using a long nail or wire.
  3. Insert the cartridge into a standard caulk gun.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Application

Apply the sealant evenly into the joint or penetration opening, ensuring full contact with all surfaces. Maintain consistent pressure on the caulk gun trigger to achieve a smooth, continuous bead. For larger gaps, apply in layers, allowing each layer to skin over before applying the next.

The sealant will expand upon exposure to heat, forming a fire-resistant barrier. Ensure adequate fill to allow for this expansion.

4.2 Tooling and Curing

Tool the sealant bead immediately after application using a wet finger or a tooling tool to achieve a smooth finish and ensure good contact with the substrate. Clean any excess sealant with a damp cloth before it cures.

Allow the sealant to cure fully before painting or exposing to water. Curing time varies depending on temperature, humidity, and bead thickness. Refer to the product label for specific curing times.

5. Maintenance and Cleanup

5.1 Cleanup

Clean tools and any uncured sealant immediately with soap and water. Cured sealant may require mechanical removal (scraping or cutting).

5.2 Storage

Store unused cartridges in a cool, dry place, away from freezing temperatures. Ensure the nozzle is sealed tightly to prevent air exposure and premature curing. The product is supplied in a case of 12 for convenience.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Poor Adhesion:

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Proper surface preparation is crucial for good adhesion.

  • Slow Curing:

Low temperatures and high humidity can extend curing times. Ensure adequate ventilation and appropriate environmental conditions.

  • Sealant Not Expanding:

The intumescent properties activate under heat exposure during a fire event. The sealant will not visibly expand under normal ambient conditions.

  • Uneven Bead:

Maintain consistent pressure on the caulk gun and a steady application speed. Practice on a scrap surface if necessary.
