2. General Safety Instructions

Always observe the following basic safety precautions when using electric tools to reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, and serious injury.

2.1 Work Area Safety

  • Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2.2 Electrical Safety

  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

2.3 Personal Safety

  • Always wear eye protection. Use safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection when necessary.
  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

4. Setup and Preparation

4.1 Charging the Battery

  1. Connect the SC 60 Plus charger to a suitable power outlet.
  2. Slide the battery pack into the charger until it clicks into place.
  3. The charger's indicator light will show the charging status. Refer to the charger's manual for specific light patterns.
  4. Once fully charged, remove the battery from the charger.

Note: For optimal battery life, avoid deep discharge and store batteries in a cool, dry place.

4.2 Inserting and Removing the Battery

  • Inserting: Align the battery pack with the base of the drill handle and slide it in until it locks securely.
  • Removing: Press the release buttons on the sides of the battery pack and slide it out.

4.3 Attaching and Removing Bits

  1. Ensure the tool is switched off and the forward/reverse switch is in the neutral (locked) position.
  2. Rotate the quick-clamping chuck counter-clockwise to open the jaws.
  3. Insert the drill bit or screwdriver bit into the chuck as far as it will go.
  4. Rotate the chuck clockwise to tighten the jaws securely around the bit. Ensure the bit is centered and firmly held.
  5. To remove, rotate the chuck counter-clockwise and pull the bit out.

4.4 Attaching the Belt Hook

The practical belt hook can be attached to either the left or right side of the tool without the need for additional tools. Simply align the hook with the designated slot on the drill body and push until it clicks into place. To remove, gently pull it off.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On/Off and Speed Control

  • To turn the tool on, press the trigger switch. The integrated work light will illuminate.
  • To turn the tool off, release the trigger switch.
  • The speed is variable and controlled by the pressure applied to the trigger switch. Pressing harder increases the speed.

5.2 Selecting Rotation Direction

Use the forward/reverse switch located above the trigger to select the desired rotation direction:

  • Push the switch to the left for forward rotation (for drilling and tightening screws).
  • Push the switch to the right for reverse rotation (for loosening screws).
  • When the switch is in the center position, the trigger is locked, preventing accidental startup.

5.3 Adjusting Torque and Speed

  • Torque Setting: Rotate the torque selector ring to choose the appropriate torque for screwdriving. Lower settings are for smaller screws or softer materials, higher settings for larger screws or harder materials. The drill setting bypasses the clutch for maximum power.
  • Speed Range: Use the speed selector switch (typically on top of the drill) to choose between two speed ranges. Position '1' is for lower speed and higher torque (e.g., screwdriving), and position '2' is for higher speed and lower torque (e.g., drilling).

5.4 Drilling and Screwdriving

  • Always secure the workpiece to prevent movement.
  • For drilling, select the drill mode on the torque ring and the appropriate speed range. Apply steady, even pressure.
  • For screwdriving, select a suitable torque setting and speed range. Start with a lower torque setting and increase if necessary to avoid stripping screw heads or damaging the material.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your tool.

6.1 Cleaning

  • Always remove the battery pack before cleaning.
  • Keep the ventilation openings of the tool clean to prevent overheating.
  • Wipe the tool housing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Clean the chuck jaws regularly to ensure proper grip on bits.

6.2 Battery Care and Storage

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not store fully discharged batteries for extended periods. Charge them periodically if not in use.
  • Protect batteries from impact and moisture.

6.3 General Inspection

Periodically check for any loose screws, damaged parts, or excessive wear. If any issues are found, contact an authorized service center for repair.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Metabo BS18 drill/driver.

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Tool does not start. Battery not inserted correctly or discharged. Forward/reverse switch in neutral (locked) position. Ensure battery is fully charged and properly inserted. Move forward/reverse switch to forward or reverse position.
Reduced power or short operating time. Battery not fully charged or nearing end of life. Charge the battery fully. If the problem persists with a fully charged battery, the battery may need replacement.
Chuck does not hold bit securely. Chuck jaws are dirty or damaged. Bit shank is worn. Clean chuck jaws. Ensure bit is inserted correctly and tightened firmly. Replace worn bits. If chuck is damaged, seek professional service.
Tool overheats. Overloading the tool. Blocked ventilation openings. Reduce load on the tool. Ensure ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris. Allow the tool to cool down.
