1. Introduction

2. Setup

2.1 System Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or higher (64-bit), macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or higher.
  • USB 2.0 compatible port (USB-C for direct connection, USB-A with adapter).
  • Internet connection for driver and software bundle download.

2.2 Driver and Software Installation

  2. Install the drivers by following the on-screen instructions.
  3. Register your SSL2 to access the included SSL Production Pack software bundle, which typically includes DAWs, plugins, and samples.

2.3 Hardware Connection

Connect the SSL2 to your computer using the supplied USB-C cable. The interface is bus-powered, meaning it draws power directly from your computer via the USB connection. Connect your microphones, instruments, and monitors as described below.

3. Operating the SSL2

3.1 Front Panel Controls

  • Input Channels 1 & 2: Each channel features an XLR/TRS combo jack for microphones or line-level instruments.
  • +48V Phantom Power: Activates phantom power for condenser microphones.
  • Line/Inst Switch: Toggles between line-level and instrument-level input impedance.
  • Gain Knobs: Adjust the input gain for each channel. Monitor the input level using the LED meters.
  • Legacy 4K Button: Engages the 4K analog enhancement, adding a subtle high-frequency boost and harmonic distortion inspired by classic SSL consoles.
  • Monitor Level: Large central knob controls the overall output level to your studio monitors.
  • Monitor Mix: Blends the input signal with the USB playback from your computer for zero-latency monitoring.
  • Headphone Level: Dedicated knob for adjusting the headphone output volume.

3.2 Rear Panel Connections

  • USB-C Port: Connects to your computer for data and power.
  • Kensington Lock: For securing the device.
  • Monitor Outputs (L/R): Balanced TRS outputs for connecting to studio monitors.
  • Inputs 1 & 2: XLR/TRS combo jacks for connecting microphones or line-level instruments.

    • Verify the Monitor Mix knob is set correctly (between Input and USB).
    • Ensure the SSL2 is selected as the audio input/output device in your computer's sound settings and your DAW.
    • Confirm drivers are installed correctly.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Reduce input gain to prevent clipping (red LEDs on the meter).
    • Check for faulty cables or connections.
    • Ensure sample rates match between your DAW and the SSL2 settings.
  • Phantom Power Not Working: Ensure the +48V button is engaged for the correct channel.
