Product Overview
The Emaux Filter Max Series Top Mount Sand Filter, Model MFV20, is designed for efficient filtration of swimming pool water. This filter utilizes sand as a filter medium to remove suspended particles from the water, ensuring clean and clear pool conditions. It features a top-mounted multi-port valve for easy operation and maintenance.

Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your sand filter. Please follow these guidelines carefully.
Safety Precautions:
- Ensure the filter is installed on a level, solid surface capable of supporting its weight when filled with sand and water.
- Locate the filter in a well-ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures.
- All electrical connections must be performed by a qualified electrician and comply with local codes.
- Do not operate the filter without water in the system.
Installation Steps:
- Positioning: Place the filter tank on its designated level surface.
- Filling with Sand:
- Remove the multi-port valve and internal components if pre-assembled.
- Place a standpipe protector (e.g., a plastic cup or funnel) over the standpipe to prevent sand from entering it.
- Carefully pour the recommended grade and amount of filter sand into the tank. Refer to the specifications for sand requirements.
- Remove the standpipe protector.
- Multi-Port Valve Installation:
- Ensure the O-ring is properly seated on the multi-port valve flange.
- Carefully lower the multi-port valve onto the tank, aligning the standpipe with the valve's opening.
- Secure the valve to the tank using the provided clamp or bolts. Do not overtighten.
- Plumbing Connections:
- Connect the pump discharge pipe to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve.
- Connect the return to pool pipe to the "RETURN" port.
- Connect the waste/drain pipe to the "WASTE" port.
- Ensure all connections are watertight using appropriate sealants and fittings.
- Initial Start-up:
- Before starting the pump, ensure the multi-port valve is set to the "BACKWASH" position.
- Open all necessary valves in the plumbing system to allow water flow.
- Start the pump and allow it to run for 2-3 minutes or until the water from the waste line runs clear.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to the "RINSE" position and run the pump for 30-60 seconds.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to the "FILTER" position. The filter is now ready for normal operation.
Operating Instructions
The multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position to prevent damage.
Multi-Port Valve Positions:
- FILTER: Normal filtering operation. Water flows through the sand bed, and clean water returns to the pool.
- BACKWASH: Used for cleaning the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the sand bed, dislodging trapped debris, which is then sent to waste.
- RINSE: Used after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush out any remaining dirty water from the filter to waste.
- WASTE (DRAIN): Bypasses the filter and sends water directly from the pool to waste. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
- RECIRCULATE (BYPASS): Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for chemical mixing without filtering.
- CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use only when the pump is off and for servicing the pump or filter. Never operate the pump with the valve in the "CLOSED" position.
Normal Operation:
Set the multi-port valve to "FILTER". Turn on the pump. Monitor the pressure gauge. The initial pressure reading after a backwash is your clean filter pressure. When the pressure rises 8-10 PSI (0.55-0.69 BAR) above this clean pressure, it indicates the filter needs backwashing.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures efficient operation and extends the life of your filter.
Backwashing:
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "BACKWASH".
- Turn on the pump and backwash until the water in the sight glass (if present) runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "RINSE".
- Turn on the pump and rinse for 30-60 seconds.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the multi-port valve to "FILTER" for normal operation.
Sand Replacement:
Filter sand typically needs replacement every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Consult a pool professional for assistance with sand replacement.
Winterization (for colder climates):
- Drain all water from the filter tank by opening the drain plug at the bottom.
- Remove the pressure gauge and drain plug, storing them in a safe place.
- Set the multi-port valve handle between two positions (e.g., between "FILTER" and "BACKWASH") to relieve pressure on the internal seal.
- Cover the filter to protect it from elements.
