Installation Guide

Required Tools:

  • Hex key set (typically 5mm)
  • Cable cutters
  • Pliers
  • Grease

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Handlebar: Ensure the handlebar area where the shifter will be mounted is clean and free of obstructions.
  2. Mount the Shifter: Loosen the clamp bolt on the shifter. Slide the shifter onto the right side of the handlebar, positioning it comfortably for thumb access to the levers. Tighten the clamp bolt securely (refer to torque specifications if available, typically 4-6 Nm).
  3. Install Shift Cable: Route the included shift cable through the shifter body. Ensure the cable head is properly seated in its housing.
  4. Route Cable Housing: Route the shift cable housing along the frame to the rear derailleur. Secure the housing with cable ties or frame guides.
  5. Connect to Derailleur: Pass the inner shift cable through the rear derailleur's cable anchor bolt. Pull the cable taut and secure it with the anchor bolt.
  6. Adjust Derailleur: Perform initial rear derailleur adjustments to ensure smooth shifting across all 7 gears. This typically involves adjusting the high (H) and low (L) limit screws and the B-tension screw, followed by cable tension adjustment using the barrel adjuster.
  7. Trim Excess Cable: Once shifting is properly adjusted, trim the excess inner shift cable, leaving approximately 2-3 cm beyond the anchor bolt. Crimp a cable end cap onto the trimmed cable to prevent fraying.

Operation

The microSHIFT Mezzo shifter uses a thumb-tap mechanism for gear changes.

Shifting Up (to a larger cog/easier gear):

Press the larger thumb lever (typically the lower one) to shift the chain to a larger cog on the cassette, making pedaling easier. The optical gear indicator will show a higher number.

Shifting Down (to a smaller cog/harder gear):

Press the smaller thumb lever (typically the upper one) to shift the chain to a smaller cog on the cassette, making pedaling harder. The optical gear indicator will show a lower number.

Optical Gear Indicator:

The integrated optical gear indicator provides a visual display of the current gear selection (1-7), allowing for quick reference during your ride.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your shifter.

Cleaning:

  • Periodically clean the shifter body and levers with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals that may damage the composite material.
  • Keep the shift cable and housing clean, especially at entry and exit points, to prevent dirt ingress.

Lubrication:

  • Apply a small amount of light lubricant to the pivot points of the shifter levers every few months or as needed, especially after riding in wet conditions.
  • Ensure the inner shift cable is lightly greased or lubricated where it enters the housing to reduce friction.

Cable Inspection:

  • Regularly inspect the shift cable and housing for signs of wear, fraying, or kinks. Replace damaged cables or housing promptly to maintain shifting performance.

Bolt Check:

  • Periodically check the shifter clamp bolt for proper tightness. Do not overtighten.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your shifter.

Problem: Shifting is slow or inconsistent.

  • Solution: Check cable tension. Use the barrel adjuster on the shifter or derailleur to increase tension (turn counter-clockwise) if shifting up is slow, or decrease tension (turn clockwise) if shifting down is slow.
  • Solution: Inspect shift cable and housing for friction, kinks, or corrosion. Replace if necessary.
  • Solution: Ensure the rear derailleur is properly aligned and its limit screws are correctly set.

Problem: Shifter levers feel stiff or sticky.

  • Solution: Clean and lubricate the shifter's pivot points and the inner shift cable.
  • Solution: Check for debris or dirt obstructing the lever mechanism.

Problem: Optical gear indicator is not displaying correctly.

  • Solution: This usually indicates a cable tension issue or a problem with the derailleur adjustment. Re-adjust cable tension and derailleur limits.
