1. Introduction
The Contec CMS50N Pulse Oximeter is a portable device designed for non-invasive measurement of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate (PR) through the finger. It utilizes advanced technology to provide quantitative measurements, offering valuable insights into how well your body distributes oxygen from your lungs. This device is suitable for use in various settings, including home healthcare, fitness clubs, and medical institutions. Regular monitoring can be crucial for individuals with chronic lung conditions or suspected lung infections.

4.2 Preparation for Measurement
- Ensure you are seated and rested for at least 5 to 8 minutes before taking a measurement.
- Adequately warm your fingers if they are cold, as cold fingers can affect accuracy.
- Avoid wearing nail polish or fake nails on the finger used for measurement, as these can interfere with the readings.
- Do not exercise or engage in strenuous activity for at least 30 minutes prior to measurement.
5. Operating Instructions
- Open the clamp of the pulse oximeter.
- Insert one of your fingers (preferably the middle finger) into the device, ensuring it is fully inserted and resting on the sensor.
- The device will automatically power on and begin measurement (or press the power button if your model requires it).
- Keep your finger still for at least 30 seconds to allow the device to obtain a stable reading.
- The display will show your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) percentage and pulse rate (PR) in beats per minute.

5.1 Understanding Readings
- Normal SpO2: For a healthy individual, a blood oxygen saturation level of 95% or above is generally considered normal.
- Low SpO2: If your readings are consistently less than 93%, it indicates low blood oxygen saturation. In such cases, it is recommended to consult a physician immediately.
- Pulse Rate: The pulse rate indicates your heart rate, measured in beats per minute. Normal ranges vary by age and activity level.
Note: Oximeters provide accurate readings, but there may be a variance of 2-4%. Your physician may recommend taking two or three readings to ensure consistency before arriving at a final assessment.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning the Device
- To clean the pulse oximeter, wipe the sensor and the device with a disinfectant wipe or a cloth dampened with a disinfectant solution.
- Allow the device to air dry completely before storing or next use.
- Do not immerse the device in any liquid.
6.2 Storage
- Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Reading/Inaccurate Reading: Ensure your finger is fully inserted and still. Check for nail polish or fake nails. Warm your fingers if they are cold. Verify batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge.
- Device Not Turning On: Check battery installation and replace batteries if necessary.
- Display Issues: If the display is dim or flickering, replace the batteries.
If issues persist after following these steps, please contact customer support.
