3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly set up your Intex SX3000 Sand Filter Pump. Refer to the video for a visual guide.

Video 3.1: Detailed guide on unboxing, assembling, and connecting the Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter Pump to an above-ground pool, including sand filling and hose connections.

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging. Ensure all components listed in the manual are present.
  2. Assemble Filter Tank: Insert the bottom filter components and tubing into the filter tank as shown in the video. Secure the top part of the filter tank.
  3. Prepare Pump Motor: Remove any protective tapes or stickers from the pump motor's inlet/outlet ports. Ensure O-rings are correctly seated.
  4. Connect to Pool: Before connecting, ensure the pool's inlet and outlet ports are capped or closed to prevent water loss. Replace the standard pool inlet/outlet fittings with the provided larger fittings for optimal flow.
  5. Position Pump: Place the pump on a stable, level surface, ideally elevated slightly to prevent water accumulation around the motor. Bricks or a dedicated pump pad can be used.
  6. Fill with Sand: Carefully pour the recommended amount of #20 silica sand (approximately 120 lbs or 55 kg) into the filter tank. Avoid getting sand into the central pipe.
  7. Connect Hoses: Connect the hoses from the pump to the filter tank and from the filter tank to the pool's inlet/outlet ports. Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent leaks. Use Hose Adapter A w/Collar if your pool requires it.
  8. Prime the Pump: Before starting, ensure the filter tank is filled with water. Open the air release valve on top of the pump to allow air to escape until a steady stream of water emerges.

Figure 3.2: The filter pump system includes two 1.5" connector hoses and a HydroAeration Technology inlet fitting for simple connection.

4. Operation

The multi-port valve on top of the filter tank allows you to select different operating modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve settings.

  1. Filter (Normal Operation): This setting is used for daily filtering of pool water. Water flows through the sand, trapping debris, and returns to the pool.
  2. Backwash: Used to clean the sand filter. Water flows in reverse through the sand, flushing trapped debris out through the waste port. Perform backwash when the pressure gauge indicates a high reading (typically in the red zone).
  3. Rinse: After backwashing, use this setting to rinse the sand and settle the sand bed before returning to filter mode. Water flows through the sand and out the waste port.
  4. Waste: Bypasses the filter and sends water directly out the waste port. Useful for quickly lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  5. Recirculate: Circulates pool water without passing it through the filter. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  6. Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use this setting when performing maintenance on the pump or filter.

24-Hour Timer: Use the built-in timer to set automatic operating cycles. Refer to the pump's control panel for specific timer programming instructions.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your sand filter pump.

  • Backwash and Rinse: Perform backwashing and rinsing regularly, typically once a week or when the pressure gauge indicates a rise of 3-5 PSI above the clean operating pressure.
  • Clean Strainer Basket: Periodically check and clean the strainer basket located in the pump motor. Turn off the pump, close valves, and remove the lid to access the basket.
  • Sand Replacement: The filter sand should be replaced approximately every 5 years, depending on usage and water quality.
  • Winterization: At the end of the swimming season, drain all water from the pump, filter tank, and hoses. Store components in a dry, frost-free area.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your sand filter pump, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Low water flow Clogged strainer basket, dirty sand filter, air in the system, closed valves. Clean strainer basket, backwash/rinse filter, release air from pump, open all valves.
Water leaking from connections Loose connections, damaged O-rings or gaskets. Tighten all connections, inspect and replace damaged O-rings/gaskets.
Cloudy pool water Insufficient filtration time, dirty filter sand, improper chemical balance. Increase filtration time, backwash/rinse filter, check and adjust pool chemical levels.
Pump not starting No power, tripped GFCI, motor malfunction. Check power supply, reset GFCI, contact customer support if motor issue persists.
