5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Focusing the Eyepiece

Adjust the focuser of your telescope or guide scope until the celestial object and the crosshairs appear sharp and clear. The eyepiece itself has a focus mechanism for the reticle; rotate the eyepiece body to bring the crosshairs into sharp focus for your eye.

5.2 Adjusting Crosshair Brightness

To activate the illuminated crosshair, turn the knob on the illuminator module. Continue turning to adjust the brightness level. Turn the knob until the crosshair is visible but not overly bright, which could obscure faint objects. Turn it off when not in use to conserve battery life.

5.3 Using for Guiding and Alignment

The illuminated crosshair is particularly useful for:

  • Polar Alignment: Aligning your equatorial mount with the celestial pole.
  • Go-To System Alignment: Precisely centering alignment stars for computerized telescope mounts.
  • Manual Guiding: Keeping a guide star centered during long-exposure astrophotography.

The wide 70-degree field of view helps in easily locating guide stars, while the precise crosshair ensures accurate centering.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Optics

To clean the eyepiece lenses:

  1. Gently brush off any loose dust with a soft lens brush or compressed air.
  2. Apply a few drops of optical cleaning fluid to a clean microfiber cloth (like the one provided).
  3. Wipe the lens surface in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outwards.
  4. Avoid touching the lens surfaces with bare fingers.

Caution: Do not use abrasive cloths, paper towels, or harsh chemicals, as these can scratch or damage the lens coatings.

6.2 Storage

When not in use, always replace the protective rubber caps on both ends of the eyepiece. Store the eyepiece in a clean, dry environment, preferably in its original packaging or a dedicated eyepiece case, to protect it from dust, moisture, and impacts. Remove the batteries from the illuminator module if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Illuminator Not Working

  • Check Batteries: Ensure the 1.5V button cell batteries are correctly installed with the proper polarity and are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
  • Check Connections: Verify that the illuminator module is securely screwed into the eyepiece body.
  • Inspect Contacts: Occasionally, battery contacts may become oxidized or misaligned. Gently clean the contacts with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, or carefully adjust them if they appear bent.

7.2 Crosshairs Out of Focus

  • Adjust Eyepiece Focus: The reticle itself can be focused independently. Rotate the upper part of the eyepiece body to bring the crosshairs into sharp focus for your individual eyesight.
  • Adjust Telescope Focuser: Ensure the main telescope or guide scope focuser is adjusted to bring the celestial object into sharp focus.

7.3 Dim or Uneven Illumination

  • Adjust Brightness Knob: Turn the brightness knob on the illuminator module to increase the intensity.
  • Replace Batteries: Dim illumination often indicates low battery power.
