4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Focusing
This lens supports both autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF). The focus mode is typically selected on the camera body.
- Autofocus: When the camera is set to AF, the lens will automatically focus on your subject.
- Manual Focus: When the camera is set to MF, rotate the focus ring on the lens to adjust focus manually.
4.2 Zooming
Rotate the zoom ring to change the focal length between 70mm and 200mm. The current focal length is indicated on the lens barrel.
4.3 Control Ring
The control ring can be assigned various functions via the camera's custom settings menu, such as aperture control, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity. Refer to your camera's manual for detailed instructions on customizing the control ring.
4.4 Customizable Function Buttons (L-Fn)
The lens features two customizable L-Fn buttons. These buttons can be assigned various functions through your camera's custom settings, such as AF-ON, focus mode, or metering mode. Consult your camera's manual for customization options.
4.5 Vibration Reduction (VR)
This lens incorporates Nikon's Vibration Reduction technology to minimize blur caused by camera shake. VR is typically controlled via the camera's menu system. It is recommended to enable VR for handheld shooting, especially in low light or at slower shutter speeds. For tripod-mounted shooting, VR can generally be turned off, as it may sometimes introduce blur.
5. Maintenance and Care
5.1 Cleaning the Lens
- Lens Surfaces: Use a blower brush to remove dust and loose particles. For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft cotton cloth or lens tissue lightly dampened with lens cleaner. Wipe gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
- Lens Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
Caution: Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals on lens surfaces.
5.2 Storage

Figure 5.1: The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S lens stored in its included CL-C3 soft lens case.
When not in use, store the lens with both caps attached in its provided CL-C3 lens case or a dry, cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing with mothballs or camphor, as these can damage the lens.
5.3 Handling Precautions
- Do not leave the lens pointed at the sun or other strong light sources for extended periods, as this can cause damage to the camera's image sensor.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can cause condensation. If moving from a cold to a warm environment, place the lens in a sealed plastic bag and allow it to acclimatize gradually.
- This lens is designed with dust and drip resistance; however, it is not waterproof. Avoid exposing it to heavy rain or submersion in water.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your lens, please refer to the following common troubleshooting steps. For more complex problems, consult your camera's manual or contact Nikon customer support.
- Lens not recognized by camera: Ensure the lens is securely attached to the camera body. Turn the camera off and on again. Check for any firmware updates for both the camera and lens.
- Autofocus not working: Verify the camera is set to autofocus mode. Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast in your scene for the autofocus system to operate effectively. Clean the lens contacts on both the lens and camera.
- Blurry images: Check your shutter speed and aperture settings. Ensure Vibration Reduction (VR) is enabled for handheld shots if needed. Verify that the lens and camera are clean and free from smudges or dust.
- Lens display not working: Check camera settings related to lens display. Ensure the lens is properly mounted and the camera is powered on.
