1. Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your CAPTIVE-AIRE 115 VAC 15.0 amp Motor Variable Speed Controller. This device is designed to provide precise variable speed adjustment, allowing users to select the desired level of air volume for compatible motors. It is UL & CSA Approved, ensuring safety and reliability.
2. Safety Information
Always adhere to local electrical codes and regulations during installation. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker before installing or servicing the controller. Improper installation can lead to electrical shock, fire, or damage to the product and connected equipment. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified electrician.
- Ensure the power supply matches the controller's voltage requirements (115 VAC).
- Do not exceed the maximum current rating of 15 amps.
- Keep the controller away from water and excessive moisture.
- Do not operate the controller with damaged wiring or components.
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:
- Variable Speed Controller Unit
- Dial Plate (Brushed Stainless Steel)
- Control Knob
- Mounting Screws (typically 2-4)
- Wire Connectors (typically 3-4)
- Instruction Sheet (this manual)

4. Setup and Installation
This controller is designed for 115 VAC applications with a maximum current rating of 15 amps. Follow these steps for proper installation:
- Power Disconnection: Before starting, ensure the power supply to the circuit where the controller will be installed is completely disconnected at the main circuit breaker.
- Wiring: Connect the controller according to the wiring diagram provided with your motor or fan unit. Typically, the controller is wired in series with the motor's hot lead. Use the provided wire connectors to secure all connections. Ensure all connections are tight and insulated.
- Mounting: Mount the controller unit into a standard electrical box or directly onto the appliance if designed for such installation. Secure the dial plate using the provided mounting screws.
- Knob Attachment: Push the control knob onto the shaft of the controller until it is firmly seated.
- Low Speed Adjustment (Important): After installation and before restoring power, locate the small blue plastic Philips head screw behind the brushed stainless steel cover plate. This screw allows for adjustment of the low-end speed limit. For applications like louvered fans, adjust this screw to ensure the fan speed is high enough to open the louvers at the lowest setting. Turn clockwise to increase the minimum speed, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- Power Restoration: Once all connections are secure and the controller is mounted, restore power at the circuit breaker.

5. Operating Instructions
The CAPTIVE-AIRE Variable Speed Controller is simple to operate:
- Power On/Off: Rotate the control knob clockwise from the "OFF" position to turn on the connected motor.
- Speed Adjustment: Continue rotating the knob clockwise to increase the motor speed and air volume. Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease the speed. The dial plate indicates the range from "OFF" to "HIGH".
- Optimal Setting: Adjust the knob to achieve the desired air volume or motor speed for your application.

6. Maintenance
The CAPTIVE-AIRE Variable Speed Controller requires minimal maintenance. To ensure optimal performance and longevity:
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the surface of the control plate with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Inspection: Annually inspect wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear or damage. Ensure the controller is free from dust and debris, especially around ventilation points if any.
- Power Disconnection: Always disconnect power before performing any cleaning or inspection.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Motor does not turn on. | No power to the circuit; incorrect wiring; faulty motor. | Check circuit breaker. Verify wiring connections. Test motor independently if possible. |
| Motor speed does not vary or only operates at high speed. | Incorrect wiring; low-end speed adjustment set too high. | Verify wiring. Adjust the low-end speed screw behind the faceplate (refer to Section 4). |
| Controller feels hot. | Overload (motor draws too much current); poor ventilation. | Ensure motor current does not exceed 15 amps. Ensure adequate airflow around the controller. Disconnect power and allow to cool. |
