K&F Concept 58mm Nano-X Series Variable ND2-ND32 and CPL 2-in-1 Camera Lens Filter Instruction Manual

Model: KF01.1322

1. Introduction

The K&F Concept Nano-X Series Variable ND2-ND32 and CPL 2-in-1 Filter is designed to provide photographers and videographers with versatile light control and reflection management. This single filter combines the functions of a Neutral Density (ND) filter and a Circular Polarizing (CPL) filter, allowing for precise exposure adjustments and enhanced image clarity by reducing glare.

This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your K&F Concept filter.

2. Key Features

  • Dual Functionality: Combines a Variable Neutral Density (ND2-ND32) filter and a Circular Polarizing (CPL) filter into one unit.
  • No "X" Cross Pattern: Advanced technology eliminates the common "X" cross pattern issue found in some variable ND filters, especially at wider angles.
  • High-Quality Optical Glass: Constructed from imported AGC optical glass for superior image quality and durability.
  • 28 Multi-Layer Coatings: Features 28 layers of nanometer coatings, providing ultra-low reflectivity (0.2%), anti-glare properties, and enhanced light transmission.
  • Waterproof and Scratch-Resistant: Protective coatings make the filter resistant to water, dust, and scratches, safeguarding your lens.
  • Durable Frame: Made from aluminum alloy with a CNC non-slip design for easy installation and removal.

3. Setup

3.1 Determining Your Lens Thread Size

Before attaching the filter, verify your camera lens's thread size. This number is typically marked on the front of your lens barrel or on the underside of your lens cap, often preceded by a "ø" (diameter) symbol. This filter is designed for 58mm lenses.

3.2 Attaching the Filter

  1. Gently align the filter's threads with the threads on the front of your camera lens.
  2. Rotate the filter clockwise until it is securely fastened. Avoid overtightening.

3.3 Important Notes on Compatibility

  • For this 58mm ND filter, a 67mm lens cap is required due to the design of the filter frame.
  • It is not possible to install a lens hood directly onto this filter.

4. Operating the Filter

The K&F Concept 2-in-1 filter allows for independent adjustment of both ND and CPL effects.

4.1 Adjusting Neutral Density (ND)

The ND component controls the amount of light entering the lens, allowing for slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright conditions. This is useful for achieving motion blur effects (e.g., silky water, blurred clouds) or maintaining a shallow depth of field.

  • To adjust the ND effect, rotate the outer ring of the filter.
  • The filter features 5 marks from "Min" to "ND32" on the frame, indicating the density stops. Rotate to your desired level of light reduction.

4.2 Adjusting Circular Polarization (CPL)

The CPL component reduces reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass, and foliage, and enhances color saturation and contrast in the sky.

  • To adjust the CPL effect, rotate the entire filter assembly while it is attached to the lens.
  • Observe the viewfinder or LCD screen as you rotate to see the effect on reflections and sky saturation.

4.3 Combined Effects

The filter allows for simultaneous use of both ND and CPL effects, offering comprehensive control over light and reflections in various shooting scenarios.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Filter

The filter features waterproof and scratch-resistant multi-coatings, making it easy to clean.

  1. Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe away dust or smudges.
  2. For stubborn marks, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the cloth (not directly to the filter) and wipe carefully.
  3. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the coatings.

5.2 Storage

When not in use, store the filter in its protective case to prevent dust accumulation and accidental damage. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Avoiding the "X" Cross Pattern

Some variable ND filters can produce an undesirable "X" cross pattern, especially at their maximum density settings or with wide-angle lenses. The K&F Concept Nano-X series is engineered to minimize this effect through advanced design.

  • If you observe any unusual patterns, try slightly reducing the ND density setting.
  • Ensure the filter is correctly mounted and clean.

6.2 Minimizing Vignetting

Vignetting (darkening at the corners of the image) can occur when using multiple filters or thick filters, especially with wide-angle lenses. This 2-in-1 filter is designed to be thinner than stacking separate ND and CPL filters, which helps reduce vignetting.

  • If vignetting is observed, it may be due to extreme wide-angle settings or other lens characteristics.
  • Consider adjusting your focal length or aperture if vignetting persists.
