5. Installation Instructions
This photocontrol is designed for easy installation into standard NEMA twist-lock receptacles or similar mounting configurations. Ensure power is OFF before proceeding.
5.1 Wiring
The ZS124 photocontrol typically features three color-coded lead wires for connection:
- Black Wire: Connect to the incoming Line (hot) power.
- White Wire: Connect to the Neutral wire.
- Red Wire: Connect to the Load (lighting fixture) wire.
Refer to the included installation sheet for a detailed wiring diagram specific to your application. Ensure all connections are tight and insulated.
5.2 Mounting
Mount the photocontrol in a location where it will receive unobstructed natural light during the day and will not be affected by artificial light sources at night (e.g., streetlights, building lights) which could cause it to cycle on and off erratically. The swivel base allows for directional adjustment after mounting.
- Insert the threaded nipple of the photocontrol into the desired mounting hole on the fixture or junction box.
- Secure the photocontrol with the provided gasket and locknut, ensuring a watertight seal.
- Orient the photocontrol so the sensor window faces the open sky, away from direct artificial light sources.
5.3 Initial Test
After installation and wiring are complete, restore power. The light fixture should turn on briefly and then turn off if sufficient ambient light is present. To test operation during daylight, cover the photocontrol's sensor window completely with an opaque material. The light fixture should turn on within a few seconds. Remove the cover, and the light should turn off after a short delay.
6. Operation
The Tork ZS124 Electronic Photocontrol operates automatically based on ambient light levels. When the natural light level falls below the 'On' threshold (1.3-1.7 foot-candles), the photocontrol will activate the connected lighting fixture. When the natural light level rises above the 'Off' threshold, the photocontrol will deactivate the lighting fixture. The 1.5:1 On/Off ratio prevents nuisance cycling due to temporary light fluctuations.
7. Maintenance
The Tork ZS124 photocontrol is designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation. However, periodic checks can ensure optimal performance:
- Clean Sensor: Occasionally wipe the photocontrol's sensor window with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or debris that might obstruct light sensing.
- Inspect Connections: Periodically check wiring connections for tightness and signs of corrosion, especially in harsh environments.
- Clear Obstructions: Ensure no new obstructions (e.g., tree branches, new structures) are blocking the sensor's view of the sky.
8. Troubleshooting
If your Tork ZS124 photocontrol is not functioning as expected, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Light stays on during the day | Sensor is obstructed or receiving insufficient light. | Check for dirt, debris, or obstructions on the sensor window. Relocate the photocontrol if necessary to ensure it receives adequate natural light. |
| Light stays off at night | No power to the photocontrol, faulty wiring, or sensor is exposed to artificial light. | Verify power supply. Check wiring connections. Ensure the sensor is not being illuminated by nearby artificial light sources (e.g., streetlights, porch lights). |
| Light cycles on/off erratically | Sensor is exposed to intermittent artificial light or reflections. | Adjust the photocontrol's orientation or relocate it to avoid interference from artificial light sources or reflective surfaces. |
| Light does not turn on/off at correct light levels | Sensor sensitivity issue or incorrect placement. | Ensure the sensor is clean and unobstructed. Verify placement for optimal ambient light detection. If issues persist, the unit may be faulty. |
