4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the cordless handset.
  2. Insert the four (4) AA rechargeable batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover.
  4. Place the handset in the base unit or charger to charge for at least 16 hours before initial use.

4.2 Base Unit Connection

  1. Connect the small end of the AC power adapter to the power jack on the back of the base unit.
  2. Plug the large end of the AC power adapter into a standard electrical outlet.
  3. Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack on the back of the base unit.
  4. Plug the other end of the telephone line cord into a telephone wall jack. If you have two lines, connect the second line cord to the LINE 2 jack and the corresponding wall jack.
  5. Ensure all cables are securely connected.

4.3 Handset Registration

Your cordless handset(s) are typically pre-registered to the base unit. If a handset displays "Unregistered" or you are adding a new handset, refer to the full user guide for specific registration steps. Generally, this involves placing the handset in the base and pressing a registration button on the base unit.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Making and Receiving Calls

  • To Make a Call: Pick up the handset or press the PHONE or SPEAKER button. Dial the desired phone number.
  • To Receive a Call: When the phone rings, pick up the handset or press the PHONE or SPEAKER button. The ANY KEY ANSWER feature allows you to answer by pressing any key (0-9, * or #).
  • To End a Call: Place the handset back in the base/charger or press the OFF button.

5.2 Adjusting Volume

During a call, press the VOLUME UP or VOLUME DOWN buttons on the handset or base unit to adjust the listening volume.

5.3 Redial

Press the REDIAL button to view the last 20 numbers dialed. Select a number and press PHONE to redial.

6. Advanced Features

6.1 Digital Answering System

  • Recording Time: Up to 22 minutes of recording time for incoming messages, announcements, and memos.
  • Message Playback: Press PLAY/STOP on the base or handset to listen to messages.
  • Remote Access: Access your answering system remotely from any touch-tone phone by calling your number and entering your remote access code.
  • Message Time & Date Stamp: Each message is automatically stamped with the time and date it was received.
  • Call Screening/Intercept: Listen to incoming messages as they are being recorded. You can answer the call at any time.

6.2 Caller ID / Call Waiting

The system stores up to 30 caller ID entries. When you subscribe to Caller ID and Call Waiting services, the caller's name and number will appear on the display during an incoming call. If you are on a call and another call comes in, you will hear a tone and the new caller's information will display.

6.3 Phonebook Directory

Store up to 50 names and numbers in the phonebook directory for quick dialing. Access the phonebook via the handset or base unit menu.

6.4 Speed Dial

Program up to 10 frequently called numbers for one-touch dialing. Refer to the full user guide for programming instructions.

6.5 2-Line Operation

The DS6251 supports two separate telephone lines, allowing you to manage calls on both lines simultaneously. Use the LINE 1 and LINE 2 buttons on the base or handset to select or switch between lines.

6.6 Conferencing

  • 3-Way Conferencing: Conduct a conference call between an outside line and up to two cordless handsets.
  • Line-to-Line Conferencing: Conference an outside call between Line 1 and Line 2.

6.7 Mute Function

During a call, press the MUTE button to temporarily turn off your microphone, allowing you to speak privately without the other party hearing you. Press MUTE again to resume the conversation.

6.8 Trilingual Prompts

The system offers menu prompts and voice announcements in English, Spanish, and French. You can select your preferred language through the system settings.

6.9 Expandability

The VTech DS6251 system is expandable up to 12 handsets, allowing you to place handsets in various rooms throughout your home or office.

6.10 DECT 6.0 Technology

DECT 6.0 Digital Technology provides superior sound quality, enhanced security against eavesdropping, and a wider range compared to older cordless phone technologies. It operates on a frequency that avoids interference with Wi-Fi networks and other wireless devices.

  • Cleaning: Clean the telephone and handset with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use cleaning sprays or harsh chemicals.
  • Battery Care: For optimal battery life, fully charge the handset batteries for 16 hours before first use. Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures. Replace batteries when they no longer hold a charge effectively.
  • Location: Place the base unit in a central location, away from sources of interference such as microwaves, computers, and large metal objects.

8. Troubleshooting

Problem Solution
No dial tone Ensure the telephone line cord is securely connected to both the base unit and the wall jack. Check if the power adapter is properly connected.
Handset not charging Verify the handset is correctly seated in the base unit or charger. Clean the charging contacts on both the handset and base/charger with a dry cloth. Ensure the power adapter is plugged in.
Poor sound quality/static Move the handset closer to the base unit. Relocate the base unit away from other electronic devices (e.g., microwaves, computers, Wi-Fi routers). Check for any physical obstructions.
Answering system not recording Ensure the answering system is turned ON. Check if the memory is full; delete old messages if necessary.
