Setup

Unpacking and Inspection:

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. Report any damage immediately to your supplier.

Assembly:

  1. Mounting the Lathe: Securely mount the lathe to a sturdy workbench using appropriate bolts and washers. Ensure the workbench can support the weight and vibrations of the lathe during operation.
  2. Attaching the Tool Rest: Insert the tool rest into its designated slot and tighten the locking mechanism. Adjust its height and position as needed for your workpiece.
  3. Installing the Tailstock: Slide the tailstock onto the bedways and lock it in place. The tailstock is removable for convenience.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the power cord to a suitable 220V power outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the "OFF" position before plugging in.

Operating Instructions

Preparing the Workpiece:

Ensure your wooden workpiece is properly prepared and balanced before mounting. Mark the center points on both ends of the workpiece.

Mounting the Workpiece:

  1. Insert the drive center into the headstock spindle.
  2. Place one end of the workpiece onto the drive center.
  3. Bring the tailstock forward until the live center engages with the other end of the workpiece.
  4. Tighten the tailstock quill to secure the workpiece firmly between the centers. Ensure it is snug but not overtightened.

Adjusting Speed:

The lathe offers four speed settings (1100, 1600, 2300, 3400 RPM) which are adjusted manually by changing the belt position on the pulleys. Always ensure the power is OFF before adjusting the speed.

  1. Step 1: Open the belt cover on the headstock.
  2. Step 2: Loosen the screws that secure the motor.
  3. Step 3: Raise the motor pulley to loosen the belt tension.
  4. Step 4: Move the belt to the desired pulley combination for the target RPM. Refer to the diagram for pulley positions corresponding to each speed.
  5. Step 5: Lower the motor pulley to tension the belt, then tighten the motor screws and close the cover.

Turning Operation:

  1. Ensure the workpiece is securely mounted and the tool rest is positioned correctly, close to the workpiece but not touching it.
  2. Turn on the power switch. Allow the lathe to reach full speed before beginning to cut.
  3. Using appropriate turning chisels (e.g., skew chisel, gouge, scraper), gently bring the tool into contact with the rotating workpiece.
  4. Apply steady, controlled pressure, moving the tool smoothly along the tool rest to shape the wood.
  5. Periodically check the workpiece for concentricity and desired shape.
  6. When finished, turn off the lathe and wait for the workpiece to stop completely before removing it.

Maintenance

Regular Cleaning:

After each use, clean the lathe thoroughly to remove wood dust and chips. Use a brush or vacuum cleaner. Do not use compressed air as it can force dust into bearings.

Lubrication:

Periodically apply a light machine oil to the bedways and other moving parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.

Belt Inspection:

Regularly inspect the drive belt for wear, cracks, or stretching. Replace the belt if any damage is observed to maintain optimal performance and prevent slippage.

Tool Sharpening:

Keep your turning chisels sharp. Dull tools can cause excessive vibration, poor cuts, and increased risk of kickback.
