Safety Information

This appliance is equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) which automatically shuts down the unit if carbon monoxide is detected or if oxygen levels become too low. Always ensure adequate ventilation in the room where the fireplace insert is installed. Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation to prevent property damage, personal injury, or loss of life.

  • Operates exclusively with Liquid Propane (LP) gas. Do not use with Natural Gas.
  • Maintain proper clearances from combustible materials as specified in the installation guide.
  • Do not obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air.
  • Never store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.

Setup and Installation

The HearthSense ALI Series is a zero-clearance insert, allowing for custom built-in applications. Professional installation is recommended for gas connections and built-in setups.

Pre-Installation Considerations:

  • This unit is designed for vent-free operation, meaning no outside duct or chimney is required.
  • Ensure the installation location provides a minimum clearance of 42 inches from the top of the fireplace to the ceiling.
  • The unit requires a 120-volt power connection. Note that the power plug is located on the back of the unit. Consider accessibility for maintenance or replacement of the power transformer if the unit is permanently built into a wall.
  • For built-in installations, plan for future access to critical areas of the fireplace, as extensive construction may be required to remove the unit once installed.
  • Inspect the firebox liner and all components for any damage from shipping before installation.

Gas Connection:

Connect the unit to a Liquid Propane (LP) gas supply only. All gas connections must be performed by a qualified professional in accordance with local codes and regulations.

Log Placement:

Carefully place the 6 hand-painted ceramic fiber logs onto the burner assembly as instructed in the detailed installation guide provided with the product. Incorrect log placement can affect flame appearance and unit performance.

Operating Instructions

Ignition:

The fireplace insert features a battery-assisted Piezo ignition system. Follow the detailed ignition procedure in the full product manual. Typically, this involves pressing and holding a control knob while simultaneously pressing the Piezo igniter button to light the pilot flame. Once the pilot is established, the main burner can be engaged.

Remote Control Operation:

The included remote control allows for convenient adjustment of the fireplace insert.

  • On/Off Function: Use the remote to turn the main burner on or off.
  • Temperature Control: The remote control features an LCD screen and allows you to set a desired room temperature. The unit will modulate its heat output to maintain this temperature.
  • Ensure the remote control receiver is properly installed and has fresh batteries (AAA battery x 3, AA battery x 4 for receiver).

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the safe and efficient operation of your fireplace insert.

  • Annual Inspection: It is recommended to have the appliance inspected annually by a qualified service technician. This includes checking gas connections, burner operation, and the ODS pilot system.
  • Cleaning: Keep the area around the appliance clear of combustible materials. Periodically clean the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Log Care: Handle ceramic logs carefully as they are fragile. Ensure they are positioned correctly after any cleaning or inspection.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your HearthSense ALI Series Fireplace Insert, review the following general troubleshooting steps. For detailed diagnostics, refer to the comprehensive manual or contact customer support.

  • No Ignition/Pilot Light Issues:
    • Check if the gas supply valve is fully open.
    • Ensure the remote control receiver has fresh batteries and is properly connected.
    • Verify the Piezo igniter is sparking.
    • If the ODS system has activated, ensure adequate ventilation and wait for the unit to cool before attempting to restart.
  • Unusual Odors:
    • A slight odor may be present during initial use as manufacturing oils burn off. This should dissipate.
    • If a strong gas odor is detected, immediately shut off the gas supply and ventilate the area. Do not operate the appliance and contact a qualified service technician.
  • Poor Flame Appearance:
    • Ensure ceramic logs are correctly positioned according to the manual.
    • Check for any obstructions around the burner ports.

If problems persist, discontinue use and contact a qualified service technician or Hearth Sense customer support.
