Introduction

The Avaya J139 IP Phone is an entry-level IP phone designed for cost-effective, basic voice communication with excellent audio performance and enhanced security capabilities. It is suitable for users with light-to-medium phone call volumes, such as cubicle workers or entry-level sales representatives.

Package Contents

Before proceeding with the setup, ensure all components are present in the package:

  • Avaya J139 IP Phone unit
  • Handset
  • Handset cord
  • Ethernet cable (may not be included, check product specifications)

Setup

1. Connecting the Phone

  1. Connect the Handset: Plug one end of the coiled handset cord into the handset and the other end into the handset port on the phone base.
  2. Connect to Network:
    • Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the phone.
    • Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into a network jack or a network switch/router.
  3. Connect Power (if not using Power over Ethernet - PoE):
    • If your network does not provide PoE, connect an optional Avaya power adapter (not included with the phone) to the power port on the phone and then to a power outlet.
    • Important Note: A power supply is not included with this phone and must be purchased separately if PoE is not available.

2. Initial Boot-up

Once connected, the phone will power on and begin its boot-up sequence. This may take a few moments. The display will show various status messages as it connects to the network and registers with your IP PBX system.

3. Configuration

Most network and system configurations for the Avaya J139 IP Phone are handled automatically by your organization's IT department. If manual configuration is required, consult your system administrator or the Avaya J139 Administrator Guide.

Operating Instructions

Making a Call

  1. Pick up the handset or press the Speaker button.
  2. Dial the desired phone number.
  3. Press the Call or Dial softkey (if available on screen) or wait for the call to connect automatically.

Answering a Call

When the phone rings, pick up the handset or press the Speaker button or the Answer softkey.

Ending a Call

Place the handset back in the cradle or press the End Call softkey or the Speaker button.

Using Softkeys

The J139 features context-sensitive softkeys displayed on the screen. Their function changes depending on the phone's current state (e.g., idle, on a call, ringing). Press the button directly below the desired softkey label on the display.

Volume Control

Use the Volume buttons (usually located below the display) to adjust the volume of the handset, speaker, or ringer.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Avaya J139 IP Phone, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the phone's surface and display. For stubborn marks, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or aerosol sprays, as these can damage the phone.
  • Environment: Keep the phone in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture.
  • Cables: Ensure all cables are securely connected and not crimped or strained.
  • Ventilation: Do not block the ventilation openings on the phone.
