Introduction
The MFJ-259D is a versatile and reliable antenna analyzer designed for amateur radio operators and professional technicians. This compact and portable device is essential for testing, tuning, and troubleshooting antennas, transmission lines, and other RF components. It covers a wide frequency range, including 100-160 KHz, 280-520 KHz, and 0.53-230 MHz, making it suitable for HF, VHF, and other bands.
The analyzer provides instant readings for SWR and complex impedance, along with other critical parameters, displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen and analog meters. Its built-in frequency generator and battery-powered operation enhance its utility for both bench and field use.
Safety Information
- Do not operate the device in wet or damp conditions.
- Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating.
- Use only specified power sources (10 AA batteries or optional MFJ-1312D AC adapter).
- Avoid connecting the analyzer to active transmitting antennas without proper isolation.
- Keep the device away from strong magnetic fields.
Product Overview
The MFJ-259D functions as a complete ham radio test station, offering multiple measurement capabilities:
- Frequency Counter: Measures the frequency of external signals.
- RF Signal Generator: Provides a test signal for various applications.
- SWR/Resistance/Reactance/Coax Analyzer: Measures Standing Wave Ratio, resistance, reactance, and analyzes coaxial cable characteristics.
- Capacitance/Inductance Meter: Determines capacitance and inductance values.

The rear panel includes the power input jack (13.8 VDC), the ANTENNA connector (SO-239 type) for connecting the antenna under test, and a FREQUENCY COUNTER INPUT (BNC type) for external signal measurement.
Setup
Powering the Unit
The MFJ-259D can be powered by:
- Internal Batteries: Install 10 AA or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (not included) into the battery compartment. Ensure correct polarity.
- External AC Adapter: Use the optional MFJ-1312D 110 VAC adapter (not included) by plugging it into the 13.8 VDC power input jack on the rear panel.
When using rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, the optional MFJ-1312D adapter can also charge them while connected to the unit.
Connecting an Antenna
Connect the antenna or transmission line you wish to analyze to the ANTENNA SO-239 connector located on the rear panel of the unit. Ensure the connection is secure.
Operating Instructions
- Power On: Press the red POWER button on the front panel to turn on the analyzer. The LCD screen will illuminate.
- Select Frequency Band: Use the FREQUENCY MHz rotary knob to select the desired frequency range (e.g., 100-160 KHz, 280-520 KHz, 0.53-2.10 MHz, 2.10-4.70 MHz, 4.70-10.9 MHz, 10.9-27.8 MHz, 27.8-66.6 MHz, 66.6-112.5 MHz, 112.5-153 MHz, 153-232 MHz).
- Tune Frequency: Use the TUNE rotary knob to fine-tune the operating frequency within the selected band. The current frequency will be displayed on the LCD.
- Read Measurements:
- SWR: The SWR analog meter and the LCD will display the Standing Wave Ratio.
- Impedance: The Impedance analog meter and the LCD will display the complex impedance (Resistance and Reactance).
- Adjusting Antennas: When adjusting Yagi, quad, loop, or other antennas, observe the SWR, resistance, and reactance readings on the display as you make changes to antenna spacing or height. This provides real-time feedback for optimization.
- Using GATE/MODE Buttons: Refer to the detailed manual for specific functions of the GATE and MODE buttons, which allow access to advanced measurement modes and settings.
- Frequency Counter Input: To use the frequency counter, connect an external signal to the FREQUENCY COUNTER INPUT (BNC) on the rear panel. Select the appropriate mode using the MODE button.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Battery Care: If using rechargeable batteries, ensure they are charged regularly. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Storage: Store the analyzer in a dry, dust-free environment away from extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
- Unit does not power on:
- Check battery installation and charge level.
- If using AC adapter, ensure it is properly connected and functional.
- Inaccurate readings:
- Ensure antenna connections are secure and free of corrosion.
- Verify the correct frequency band is selected.
- Check for external RF interference.
- Display issues:
- If the LCD is dim, check battery power.
- If the display is erratic, try restarting the unit.
