4. Setup
Before you begin, ensure you have an active internet connection from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and a working modem. This router requires a separate modem for internet connectivity.
4.1 Initial Connection Steps
- Power Off Devices: Disconnect the power from your cable modem and the Askey router.
- Connect Ethernet Cable: Connect one end of the provided Ethernet cable to the LAN port on your modem. Connect the other end to the yellow 'Internet' (WAN) port on the back of your Askey router.
- Power On Modem: Reconnect the power to your cable modem. Wait approximately 10-20 seconds for the modem to fully boot up and establish an internet connection (indicated by stable status lights on the modem).
- Power On Router: Reconnect the power to your Askey router. Wait for the router's indicator lights to stabilize, which typically signifies it has booted up and connected to the modem.
- Connect Devices: You can now connect your devices via Wi-Fi or by plugging an Ethernet cable from your computer into one of the four GigE LAN ports on the router.
4.2 Accessing Router Settings
To access the router's configuration interface, open a web browser on a device connected to the router's network and enter the router's default IP address (often 192.168.1.1) into the address bar. You will be prompted for a username and password, which are typically found on a label on the router itself.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Wi-Fi Connectivity
The router broadcasts two Wi-Fi networks: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band offers wider coverage, while the 5 GHz band provides faster speeds over shorter distances.
- Connecting Devices: On your device (smartphone, laptop, etc.), search for available Wi-Fi networks. Select your router's network name (SSID) and enter the Wi-Fi password. Both are usually printed on a label on the router.
- Personalizing Wi-Fi: Through the router's web interface, you can change your Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs) and passwords for enhanced security and personalization.
5.2 Ethernet Connectivity
For devices requiring a stable, high-speed connection, use the four GigE LAN ports on the back of the router. Connect an Ethernet cable from the device to any of these ports.
5.3 WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
The router supports WPS for easy connection of compatible devices without manually entering the password. Press the WPS button on the router and then activate WPS on your device within two minutes.
6. Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your router:
- Placement: Place the router in a central location, away from obstructions, large metal objects, and other electronic devices that may cause interference.
- Cleaning: Keep the router clean and free of dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure the router's ventilation holes are not blocked to prevent overheating.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the manufacturer's website for firmware updates. Firmware updates can improve performance, add features, and fix security vulnerabilities.
- Rebooting: If you experience network issues, try rebooting the router by unplugging its power adapter for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter problems with your router, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
- No Internet Connection:
- Verify that your modem is working correctly and has an active internet connection.
- Check all cable connections between the modem and the router, and between the router and your devices.
- Reboot both your modem and router in the correct sequence (modem first, then router).
- Ensure the router's WAN/Internet light is on and stable.
- Weak Wi-Fi Signal or Slow Speeds:
- Move closer to the router.
- Relocate the router to a more central location, away from walls, large appliances, and other sources of interference.
- Ensure your devices are connecting to the appropriate Wi-Fi band (5 GHz for faster speeds, 2.4 GHz for better range).
- Reduce the number of active devices on the network.
- Cannot Access Router Settings:
- Ensure your device is connected to the router's network (either Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- Verify you are using the correct IP address (e.g.,
192.168.1.1) and login credentials. - Try clearing your browser's cache or using a different browser.
- If you have forgotten your password, you may need to perform a factory reset (see below).
- Factory Reset:
- If all else fails, you can perform a factory reset. Locate the small 'Reset' button on the back of the router (often recessed). With the router powered on, use a paperclip or similar pointed object to press and hold the reset button for about 10-15 seconds until the lights on the router flash or change. This will restore the router to its default factory settings, including Wi-Fi name and password. You will need to reconfigure your settings after a factory reset.
