ICON 12422 Holding Tank Instruction Manual

Model: 12422

1. Introduction and Overview

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, maintenance, and general use of the ICON 12422 Holding Tank. Proper installation and care are crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your RV's waste water system. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning any work.

2. Setup and Pre-Installation

2.1 Accessing the Tank

Before replacing or installing a new holding tank, it is often necessary to access the existing tank by disassembling the RV's underbelly. This process exposes all tank fittings, connections, and locations. For units with an outdoor kitchen, be aware that the shallow drain into the gray tank may be concealed, making it difficult to locate. Ensure all necessary cuts and disconnections are made before attempting to remove the tank.

2.2 Measuring the Tank

Accurate measurements are essential for selecting the correct replacement tank. Measure the overall dimensions of the existing tank, including any flanges. ICON tanks typically feature a 1.25-inch flange. This tank measures approximately 70 inches long by 17.75 inches wide by 7 inches high.

2.3 Identifying Fittings

Each holding tank will have at least three fittings: a drain, at least one vent, and one or two inlets for sink/toilet water. This specific tank features four fittings: a drain, a vent, a sink inlet, and a shower inlet. It also includes four level sensors. Note the location and type of each fitting for proper replacement.

3. Installation

3.1 Installing Fittings (Glue-in vs. Rubber Grommets)

There are two main types of fittings: glue-in and rubber grommets. For glue-in fittings, clean the area with acetone to remove grease. Apply Ebs polymer glue around the fitting and work it in with a slight spin. Allow 24 hours for the glue to cure.

For rubber grommets, drill the hole to the outside inner diameter (ID) of the inside part of the fitting to ensure a proper seal. Collapse the grommet and wedge it into the hole. Rotate it to allow the inside of the seal to seat properly. A little soap can help with insertion. There should be minimal side-to-side play once installed.

3.2 Installing the Dump Valve

Apply Ebs glue to the dump valve, ensuring no glue gets inside the gate mechanism. Attach the dump valve to the fitting on the tank. Give it a slight twist to work the glue around and position it at a 90-degree angle if required by your setup. Allow it to set.

3.3 Connecting to Termination End

Once the hub is glued on, you have various options for connecting to the termination end, where your flexible hose will attach. Options include hub-to-hub connections or hub-to-spigot connections. ICON's ABS thermoform tanks have spigot ends, requiring a hub-to-hub connection when coming off the tank. The pipe size is the same as the spigot size. It is recommended to perform this step after the tank is already installed in the RV.

4. Specific Tank Considerations: Black Tank

The primary difference between a black tank and a gray tank in this application is the area where the toilet will mount. For black tanks, a glue-in threaded fitting is used for the toilet connection. For a 0.75-inch floor, use a threaded toilet flange. Apply pipe dope around it and thread it down until it is tight. For thicker floors (e.g., 2-inch or 2.25-inch), an adjustable fitting is available. Ensure the toilet flange bolts align perpendicularly with your toilet's orientation.

5. Operating the Holding Tank

Once installed, ensure all connections are secure and leak-free. Familiarize yourself with the location of the dump valve and the termination end for proper waste disposal. Regularly monitor the tank's level using the installed level sensors to prevent overfilling.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is key to extending the life of your holding tank and preventing odors or clogs. Flush the tank thoroughly after each use, especially the black tank. Use RV-specific tank treatments to break down waste and control odors. Periodically inspect all fittings and connections for any signs of leaks or wear.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues such as slow draining, persistent odors, or inaccurate level readings, check for clogs in the drain lines or fittings. Ensure proper ventilation of the tank. For persistent issues, consult a qualified RV technician.
