1. Introduction
The Fischer FERITSCOPE FMP30 is a hand-held instrument designed for the nondestructive measurement of ferrite content in austenitic and duplex steel. This device conforms to DIN EN ISO 17655 standards, providing accurate and reliable measurements essential for quality control and material analysis. It displays measured values in ferrite percentage (% Fe) or as a ferrite number (FN).
Key features include a large color display, a measurement range of 0.1-80% FE (0.1 to 110 FN), extensive memory capabilities for up to 20,000 readings, and user-defined application memories.
2. Components Included
Upon unpacking, verify that all the following components are present:
- FERITSCOPE FMP30 Measurement Device
- Calibration Certificate
- FGAB1.3-Fe Probe
- Set of 5 Standards (austenitic/duplex steel with delta ferrite contents of approx. 0.3 FN, 1.5 FN, 10 FN, 45 FN, 110 FN, and Fe Base 140 FN) with calibration certificate
- USB Cable
- Fischer Data Center Software (on CD)
- Batteries
- Wrist Strap (Lanyard)
- Carrying Case
- Manual (on CD)
3. Device Overview
The FERITSCOPE FMP30 features a robust industrial-strength housing and a large color display for clear readability of measurements and settings.

Figure 1: The Fischer FERITSCOPE FMP30 measurement device shown on its stand, displaying a ferrite reading. The probe is connected via a cable to the top of the device.
The front panel includes navigation buttons, function keys (DEL, FINAL RES, BLOCK RES, ON/OFF, ZERO, CAL, MENU, PRINT, ENTER), and a clear display area for measurement values, application settings, and block information.
4. Setup and Initial Operation
4.1 Battery Installation
The device operates on batteries. Ensure the included batteries are correctly inserted into the battery compartment, observing the polarity markings. Close the compartment securely.
4.2 Probe Connection
Connect the FGAB1.3-Fe probe to the designated port on the FERITSCOPE FMP30. Ensure the connection is firm and secure to prevent measurement inaccuracies.
4.3 Powering On/Off
Press the ON/OFF button to power on the device. To power off, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the display turns off.
5. Calibration
Accurate measurements depend on proper calibration. The FERITSCOPE FMP30 comes with a set of 5 standards and a calibration certificate. It is crucial to perform calibration regularly, especially when measuring different material types or when high precision is required.
- Ensure the probe is clean and free from debris.
- Access the calibration menu on the device using the CAL button or through the MENU.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the device using the provided standards. This typically involves placing the probe on each standard and confirming the reading.
- Store the calibration standards in a clean, dry environment to maintain their integrity.
6. Measurement Procedures
To perform a ferrite content measurement:
- Power on the device and ensure it is calibrated for the material being tested.
- Select the appropriate application memory if you have specific settings saved (up to 100 application memories can be named by the user).
- Place the probe firmly and perpendicularly onto the surface of the material to be measured.
- The measurement will be displayed on the large color screen, either in ferrite percentage (% Fe) or as a ferrite number (FN).
- Repeat measurements as necessary for statistical analysis or to ensure consistency.

6.1 Data Management
The FERITSCOPE FMP30 can store up to 20,000 readings in up to 4,000 blocks. Full statistical capabilities are available for production and process control. Use the PRINT button to output data or connect the device to a computer via the USB cable.
The included Fischer Data Center Software allows for comprehensive data analysis, archiving, and the creation of user-custom designed report templates, including date and time-stamped archiving of data.
7. Maintenance and Care
7.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the device and probe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the housing or display. Ensure the probe tip is free from any residue that could affect measurement accuracy.
7.2 Storage
When not in use, store the FERITSCOPE FMP30 and its accessories in the provided carrying case. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
7.3 Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator shows low power, replace all batteries with new ones of the same type. Refer to section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.
8. Troubleshooting
- Device does not power on: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are charged or replaced.
- Inaccurate readings: Ensure the probe is clean, properly connected, and the device has been calibrated recently using the provided standards. Verify the probe is placed firmly and perpendicularly on the test surface.
- No display: Check battery power. If the issue persists, contact customer support.
- Data transfer issues: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the device and the computer. Verify that the Fischer Data Center Software is correctly installed and running.
