4.6 VOX (Voice Operated Exchange)

The VOX function allows for hands-free operation. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, without needing to press the PTT button. The sensitivity of VOX can typically be adjusted via the menu.

4.7 Squelch

Squelch filters out weak signals and background noise. The RB615 allows for adjustment of the squelch level. A lower squelch level (e.g., 2 instead of the factory default 4) can allow reception of weaker signals, but may also increase background noise.

4.8 CTCSS/DCS Tones

CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digitally Coded Squelch) tones are used to filter out unwanted conversations on a channel. Only radios set to the same channel and CTCSS/DCS tone will hear each other. Note that CTCSS/DCS codes may vary slightly between manufacturers; refer to the programming software for precise settings if interoperability issues arise.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Clean the radio's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the charging port and earpiece jack are free from dust and debris.

5.2 Battery Care

To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Store the radio and battery in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods. Use only original or approved replacement batteries.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Common Issues and Solutions

  • No Power: Check battery charge level. Ensure battery is correctly installed.
  • Cannot Transmit/Receive: Verify both radios are on the same channel and have matching CTCSS/DCS tones. Check battery level. Ensure PTT button is fully pressed when transmitting.
  • Poor Audio Quality/Range: Ensure antenna is not obstructed. Move to an open area if communicating over long distances. Adjust squelch level. Environmental factors (buildings, terrain) can significantly impact range.
  • Unexpected Behavior/Settings: The RB615 can be programmed via PC software. If settings are inadvertently changed or require advanced configuration, consider using the official Retevis programming software and cable. This allows for saving and restoring configurations.
  • Voice Annunciations: If the radio announces channel numbers, this feature can typically be disabled via the programming software for a quieter operation.
