2. Important Safety Information

4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Tools Required
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Measuring Tape
- Pencil
4.2 Door Preparation
Ensure your door is prepared with standard residential door preparations. This handleset is designed to fit most common door thicknesses and backsets. Verify your door's dimensions match the product specifications before proceeding.
4.3 Step-by-Step Installation
- Install the Latch and Strike Plate: Insert the latch into the door edge and secure it with screws. Install the strike plate on the door frame, ensuring proper alignment with the latch.
- Install the Exterior Handleset: Position the exterior handleset assembly onto the door, ensuring the spindle passes through the latch mechanism.
- Install the Interior Mounting Plate: Attach the interior mounting plate to the exterior handleset using the provided screws.
- Install the Interior Lever/Handle: Secure the interior lever or handle to the mounting plate.
- Install the Electronic Deadbolt: Insert the deadbolt into the door edge. Connect the cable from the exterior keypad to the interior deadbolt assembly. Secure the interior deadbolt assembly to the door.
- Install Batteries: Insert 4 AA batteries (sold separately) into the battery pack of the electronic deadbolt. Ensure correct polarity.
- Perform Door Handing Process: After battery installation, the lock will automatically attempt to determine door handing. If it does not, or if the lock does not operate smoothly, manually initiate the handing process by holding the lock button for 10-20 seconds until the lock calibrates. This step is crucial for proper motorized locking and unlocking.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Keypad Operation
The keypad is backlit for increased visibility, especially at night. The backlight remains illuminated for 30 seconds after inactivity or after a button press.
5.2 Setting User Codes
Your Smartcode 5 lock supports up to 8 user access codes and 1 master code option. The master code is used for programming and managing user codes, not for unlocking the door.
- To Add a User Code:
- Enter your existing Master Code (if set).
- Press the "Program" button (usually located on the interior assembly).
- Enter a new 4-8 digit user code.
- Press the "Lock" button.
- Test the new user code to ensure it unlocks the door.
- To Delete a User Code:
- Enter your Master Code.
- Press the "Program" button.
- Enter the user code you wish to delete.
- Press the "Lock" button.
- To Change the Master Code: Refer to the full programming guide included with your lock for detailed instructions on changing the master code.
5.3 Locking and Unlocking
- To Lock from Outside: Press the "Lock" button on the keypad, or turn the key. The lock features one-touch motorized locking.
- To Unlock from Outside: Enter a valid user code on the keypad, or use the physical key.
- To Lock from Inside: Use the turn button on the interior assembly.
- To Unlock from Inside: Use the turn button on the interior assembly.
The lock can be customized for automatic door locking after 30 seconds for added peace of mind. Refer to the full programming guide for enabling/disabling this feature.
5.4 SmartKey Re-key Technology
The SmartKey re-key technology allows you to re-key the lock yourself in seconds, in 3 easy steps, to work with any other SmartKey compatible key. This is useful if you want to match your new lock to an existing key.
- Insert your functioning key into the lock.
- Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise.
- Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole.
- Remove the SmartKey tool and the functioning key.
- Insert your new key fully and firmly into the lock.
- Rotate the new key 90 degrees counter-clockwise to the original position.
- Remove the new key. The lock is now re-keyed.
Always test the new key multiple times to ensure successful re-keying before closing the door.
6. Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the lock with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish and electronic components.
- Battery Replacement: Replace all four AA batteries when the low battery indicator activates (if applicable) or when the lock's response time slows. Always replace all batteries at once with new, high-quality alkaline batteries.
- Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the mechanical parts of the lock (latch, deadbolt mechanism) with a silicone-based lubricant. Do not lubricate the cylinder with graphite or oil-based lubricants if using SmartKey technology.
- Environmental Protection: While designed for outdoor use, extreme weather conditions can affect performance. Ensure proper installation to protect internal components.
7. Troubleshooting Common Issues
