  2. Inspect the cutting wheel and blades for damage, wear, or loose fasteners.
  3. Ensure all guards and safety features are in place and functional.
  4. Clear the work area of any obstructions, including rocks, roots, and debris.
  5. Ensure the ground around the stump is stable and level.

4.2 Starting the Engine

  1. Place the stump grinder on a firm, level surface.
  2. Engage the parking brake, if equipped, to prevent movement.
  3. Move the throttle lever to the "FAST" position.
  4. Turn the fuel valve to the "ON" position.
  5. If the engine is cold, apply choke. For a warm engine, choke may not be necessary.
  6. Pull the recoil starter handle firmly and smoothly until the engine starts. Do not let the rope snap back.
  7. Once started, gradually open the choke (if used) as the engine warms up.

4.3 Stump Grinding Procedure

The Toro 22602 features a 12-toothed tungsten carbide tipped "Quadrublade" system designed for efficient stump removal.

  1. Position the stump grinder so the cutting wheel is slightly above the stump, ensuring the machine is stable.
  2. Engage the cutting wheel clutch or lever according to the machine's controls.
  3. Slowly lower the cutting wheel into the stump, moving it from side to side in a controlled, sweeping motion. Avoid forcing the wheel.
  4. Grind the stump down in layers, typically 1-2 inches at a time, ensuring not to overload the engine.
  5. Continue grinding until the stump is removed to the desired depth below ground level.
  6. Disengage the cutting wheel and allow it to stop completely before moving the machine or performing any adjustments.
