Setup
Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove the guitar from its packaging. Inspect the instrument for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.
Tuning the Guitar
The Kramer SM1 is equipped with a Floyd Rose 1000 series tremolo system and a locking nut. Initial tuning requires unlocking the nut, tuning the strings with the machine heads, and then re-locking the nut. Fine-tuning can then be performed using the fine tuners on the tremolo bridge.
- Loosen the three locking nut screws on the headstock using an Allen wrench.
- Tune each string to the desired pitch using the tuning machines.
- Once all strings are tuned, tighten the locking nut screws firmly.
- Use the fine tuners on the Floyd Rose bridge to make small adjustments to achieve perfect pitch.
Strap Installation
Attach your guitar strap to the strap buttons located on the body of the guitar. Ensure the strap is securely fastened before playing.

Operating the Guitar
Controls Overview
The Kramer SM1 features a straightforward control layout for versatile tone shaping:
- Volume Knob: Controls the overall output volume of the guitar.
- Tone Knob: Adjusts the treble frequencies, allowing for brighter or warmer tones.
- 5-Way Pickup Selector Switch: Selects different pickup configurations.
Pickup Selector Positions
| Position | Description |
|---|---|
| 1 (Bridge) | Bridge Humbucker (Seymour Duncan JB) for powerful, bright tones. |
| 2 | Bridge Humbucker (split) + Middle Single Coil (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails) for a brighter, articulate sound. |
| 3 (Middle) | Middle Single Coil (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails) for balanced, clear tones. |
| 4 | Neck Single Coil (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails) + Middle Single Coil (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails) for a warm, bell-like tone. |
| 5 (Neck) | Neck Single Coil (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails) for warm, smooth tones. |
Note: The Seymour Duncan Cool Rails are humbuckers in a single-coil size, providing hum-cancelling properties. The 5-way switch allows for various coil-splitting and combination options.
Using the Floyd Rose Tremolo
The Floyd Rose 1000 series tremolo allows for expressive pitch bending and dive bombs. Ensure the locking nut is tightened before extensive use of the tremolo. After heavy tremolo use, re-check tuning with the fine tuners.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Wipe down the guitar body, neck, and strings with a soft, lint-free cloth after each use to remove sweat and oils. For the body, a guitar-specific polish can be used periodically. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
String Replacement
Strings should be replaced regularly, depending on playing frequency and style. When replacing strings on a Floyd Rose system, it is recommended to replace them one at a time to maintain bridge balance, or to block the tremolo before removing all strings.
Fretboard Care
The ebony fretboard should be conditioned periodically (e.g., every 6-12 months) with a suitable fretboard oil to prevent drying and cracking. Clean the fretboard before applying conditioner.
Hardware Inspection
Periodically check all screws and hardware for tightness, especially the tuning machine screws, strap buttons, and bridge components. Do not overtighten.

Troubleshooting
- No Sound:
- Check if the guitar cable is securely plugged into both the guitar and the amplifier.
- Ensure the amplifier is turned on and its volume is up.
- Verify the guitar's volume knob is turned up.
- Test with a different cable or amplifier to isolate the issue.
- Poor Tuning Stability:
- Ensure the locking nut screws are tightened firmly after tuning.
- Check for worn strings; old strings can cause tuning issues.
- Verify the tremolo springs are properly tensioned and balanced.
- Ensure the bridge posts are stable and not loose.
- Buzzing or Fret Noise:
- Check string action (height) at the bridge.
- Inspect for uneven frets or a bowed neck. Professional setup may be required.
- Ensure proper playing technique (e.g., sufficient finger pressure).
