Maintenance

Regular cleaning and descaling are essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of your coffee maker.

Daily Cleaning

  • Carafe and Brew Basket: After each use, remove the carafe and brew basket. Discard used coffee grounds and rinse the filter. Both components can be washed in warm, soapy water or placed on the top rack of a dishwasher.
  • Water Tank: The removable water tank can be easily detached and rinsed or washed as needed.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the unit in water.

Descaling (Clean Cycle)

The 'Clean' icon on the display will illuminate after approximately 100 brew cycles, indicating that it's time to descale the coffee maker. This process removes mineral buildup that can affect performance and coffee taste.

  1. Prepare Descaling Solution: Fill the water tank with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Do not exceed the 12-cup max fill line.
  2. Start Clean Cycle: Place the empty carafe on the warming plate. Press the 'Clean' button on the control panel. The clean icon will flash, and the coffee maker will begin a descaling cycle, which typically takes 20-30 minutes.
  3. Rinse Cycle: After the clean cycle is complete, discard the descaling solution. Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and run two full brew cycles (without coffee grounds) to rinse the system thoroughly.
  4. Reset Clean Indicator: The 'Clean' icon should turn off automatically after the descaling process. If it remains on, repeat the descaling process.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your KitchenAid coffee maker, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • Coffee Not Brewing: Ensure the unit is properly plugged in, the water tank is filled, and the brew basket is correctly seated. Check if the 'Brew/Cancel' button was pressed.
  • Weak Coffee: Verify that you are using the correct coffee-to-water ratio. Ensure the 'Bold' brew strength is selected if desired. Check if the filter is properly placed and not clogged.
  • Overflowing Filter Basket: This can occur if too much coffee is used, the grind is too fine, or the filter is clogged. Ensure the correct amount of coffee is used and the filter is clean.
  • Coffee Not Hot Enough: Ensure the warming plate is active after brewing. If the 'Remaining Keep Warm Time' icon is off, the warming plate has automatically shut off after 4 hours.
  • 'Clean' Light Remains On: This indicates the coffee maker needs descaling. Follow the descaling instructions in the 'Maintenance' section.
