2. Package Contents
Upon opening the package, verify that all items are present:
- Runleader RL-HM032C Hour Meter/Tachometer Unit
- Inductive Wire (pre-attached)
- Mounting Accessories (e.g., adhesive pads, zip ties, screws, nuts)
- CR2032 Lithium Battery (pre-installed with insulating sheet)
- Operating Instructions Manual
3. Product Features
The RL-HM032C offers multiple functions to monitor your engine effectively:
- Hour Meter (TOT): Displays the total accumulated running time of the engine. This value is non-resettable and remains visible even when the engine is off. The range is 0-99999 hours with 0.1-hour accuracy. Initial total hours can be preset.
- Resettable Job Timer (JOB): Measures the duration of a specific task or job. This timer can be reset to zero for new tasks, such as oil changes or air filter replacements.
- Service Timers (SVC): Programmable maintenance interval reminders. When the set service time is reached, a warning icon will flash to alert the user.
- Tachometer (RPM): Displays the real-time engine revolutions per minute. It supports different engine firing patterns for accurate readings and can record the maximum RPM achieved.
- Programmable RPM Alert: Set a custom RPM threshold. If the engine RPM exceeds this value, a red backlight will display, and a warning icon will flash.
- Programmable Firing Patterns: Allows adjustment for various engine types (e.g., 2-stroke, 4-stroke, different cylinder counts) to ensure accurate RPM data.
- Initial Time Setting: Allows users to input an existing total hour value, useful when replacing an old hour meter.
- Backlight Display: Features a green backlight for normal operation and a red backlight for alerts (SVC or RPM alert). The backlight mode is programmable.
- Battery Replaceable: Powered by a replaceable CR2032 lithium battery.
- Waterproof Rate: IP65 rated for protection against dust and water jets.

4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to install your Runleader RL-HM032C:
- Activate the Battery: The unit comes with a CR2032 battery pre-installed, separated by an insulating plastic sheet. Carefully remove this sheet from the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Ensure the battery cover is securely closed after removal.
- Connect the Inductive Wire: Wrap the inductive wire (pre-attached to the unit) 5-8 times around the spark plug cable of your engine. Secure it with zip ties if necessary. This wire detects the engine's ignition pulses to measure RPM and track hours.
- Mount the Unit: The RL-HM032C can be mounted using either the provided adhesive pads or screws.
- Adhesive Mounting: Clean the desired mounting surface thoroughly. Attach the adhesive pad to the back of the unit, then firmly press the unit onto the cleaned surface.
- Screw Mounting: Use the provided screws and nuts to secure the unit to a suitable flat surface on your equipment.
- Initial Power On: The unit will automatically power on and display the total hours (TOT) once it detects engine activity or when buttons are pressed.

5. Operation
The RL-HM032C features two buttons: 'M' (Menu) and 'S' (Set) for navigating and configuring settings.
5.1 Navigating Display Modes
Press the 'M' button briefly to cycle through the main display modes:
- TOT (Total Hours): Displays accumulated engine run time.
- JOB (Job Timer): Displays resettable job time.
- SVC (Service Timer): Displays remaining time until service is due.
- RPM (Revolutions Per Minute): Displays real-time engine speed when the engine is running.
- MAX RPM: Displays the highest RPM recorded.
5.2 Setting Parameters
To enter setting mode for various parameters, press and hold the 'M' button for approximately 3 seconds until the display changes to a setting option. Use the 'S' button to adjust values and 'M' to confirm and move to the next setting.
- Engine Firing Pattern: Select the appropriate firing pattern (e.g., 1P1R, 2P1R, 4P1R) based on your engine's type and cylinder count for accurate RPM readings. Refer to the manual's chart for specific patterns.
- RPM Alert Value: Set your desired maximum RPM alert threshold.
- Service Interval (SVC): Program the desired service interval in hours.
- Initial Total Hours (TOT): If replacing an old meter, you can set the initial total hours.
- Backlight Mode: Choose between always-on, auto-off, or alert-only backlight modes.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
The RL-HM032C uses a replaceable CR2032 lithium battery. When the battery indicator shows low power, replace the battery by twisting the battery cover on the back of the unit. Ensure the new battery is inserted with the correct polarity.

Figure 11: Battery Replacement
6.2 Cleaning
Wipe the unit with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the display or casing.
6.3 Waterproofing
The unit is rated IP65, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. However, it is not designed for submersion.
7. Troubleshooting
- Display Not Working: Check if the insulating plastic sheet has been removed from the battery compartment. Ensure the CR2032 battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge.
- Inaccurate RPM Readings: Verify that the correct engine firing pattern is selected in the settings. Ensure the inductive wire is wrapped tightly and sufficiently (5-8 times) around the spark plug cable.
- Unit Not Turning On/Off Automatically: The unit is designed to activate upon detecting engine ignition pulses. If it's not responding, check the inductive wire connection. The unit will enter sleep mode after a period of inactivity.
