Product Overview

The Cartell CP-4 system consists of a sensor unit (often referred to as a 'puck') with an integrated cable, designed for burial to detect the presence of vehicles.

Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your Cartell CP-4 system. It is highly recommended to run the cable in conduit to protect it and facilitate future maintenance or replacement.

Installation instructions for Cartell CP-4

Step-by-Step Installation:

  1. 1. Serial Number

Locate the serial number on the bottom of the 'puck' unit and on the product box. This number is handy for product inquiries and support.

  2. 2. Trenching Pipe & Cable

Trench 1/2" PVC pipe beside the driveway where the CP-4 will be buried. The trench should be deep enough to allow for 3-5 inches of cover over the buried unit. Note: Warranty may be voided if the cable is not run in conduit.

  3. 3. Conduit & Slip Joint

After pulling the cable through the plastic conduit, insert the conduit inside the slip joint on the 'puck'. Do NOT glue the slip joint to allow for easy un-installation if needed.

  4. 4. Connect to Gate

The CP-4 works with all gate operators (powered or solar). Connect wires as follows:

Wire ColorFunction (Power Gates)Function (Solar Gates)
    RedPower +Power +
    BlackCommon -Ground or Common
WhiteExit N.O.Free Exit or Open Terminal
    BlueExit N.C.N/A
    YellowExit N.C.N/A

The system supports universal voltage AC & DC (8-24 VAC or 8-30 VDC).

  5. 5. Test Sensitivity

In most cases, sensitivity will NOT need to be adjusted as it is set to high from the factory. However, if adjustment is needed, use the DIP switches inside the unit:

    • HIGH (Default): Detects vehicles 12-14 feet. DIP switches 1 & 2 are in OFF position.
    • MEDIUM: Detects vehicles 5-6 feet. DIP switch 1 is ON, 2 is OFF.
    • LOW: Detects vehicles 2-3 feet. DIP switch 1 is OFF, 2 is ON.

Note: DIP switch color may vary.

  6. 6. Bury Conduit & "Puck"

Test the unit with the gate by driving a steel vehicle over the 'puck' (or driving vehicle by). If it opens the gate correctly, finish installation by burying the conduit and 'puck' 3-5 inches below the surface.

Other Installation Considerations:

  • The CP-4 may be installed above ground by screwing the 'puck' directly to a post or building. If above ground, ensure the puck is immovable to eliminate false alarms.
  • If installed above ground, conduit is required to mechanically protect the cable (animals will eat it).
  • Install CP-4 at least:
    • 6-10 feet away from buried power, telephone, or invisible dog fence.
    • 10 feet away from natural gas lines.
    • 20 feet away from power pole with a transformer.
    • 100 feet back from railroad traffic.
    • 200 feet away from high power substation power lines.
    • 80-100 feet back from gate operator.

Operation

The Cartell CP-4 system operates by detecting magnetic disturbances caused by moving steel vehicles. When a vehicle passes the sensor, a signal is sent to your gate operator, triggering the gate to open for free exit.

How the System Works:

Diagram showing alerts being activated

Image: A diagram with the number '3' indicating 'Alerts are Activated'. Cartell systems can activate audible alerts, trigger cameras and lights, integrate with components of a security/home automation system, or automatically open a driveway gate for free exit.

Diagram indicating no false alarms

Maintenance

The Cartell CP-4 system is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks can ensure continued reliable operation:

  • Inspect Cable: Periodically check the exposed portions of the cable for any signs of damage, especially if not run through conduit.
  • Clear Area: Ensure the area directly above the buried sensor is clear of large metal objects or debris that could interfere with detection.
  • Connection Integrity: Verify that all wire connections to the gate operator are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Conduit Protection: If the unit needs replacement in the future, having the cable run through conduit will significantly simplify the process, as you can often fish a new wire through the existing conduit without re-trenching.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Cartell CP-4 system, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • System Not Detecting Vehicles:
    • Check the sensitivity setting (DIP switches). It might be set too low for your vehicle type or installation depth.
    • Verify that the vehicle is made of steel and is moving at least 5 MPH when passing the sensor.
    • Ensure the sensor is buried at the correct depth (3-5 inches).
    • Inspect the cable for any damage or breaks, especially if not in conduit.
  • Gate Not Opening After Detection:
    • Confirm all wiring connections to the gate operator are correct and secure (Red, Black, White, Blue/Yellow).
    • Check the power supply to the CP-4 unit (8-24 VAC or 8-30 VDC).
    • Ensure the gate operator itself is functioning correctly and is receiving the signal from the CP-4.
  • False Triggers:
    • Adjust the sensitivity setting to a lower level.
    • Ensure there are no large, moving metal objects (e.g., metal trash cans, tools) near the sensor's detection zone.
    • Verify the sensor is installed at the recommended distances from power lines, transformers, and other potential interference sources.
  • Unit Failure (e.g., due to moisture):
    • While the unit is designed to be weather-resistant, ensure proper sealing and installation, especially if not using conduit.
    • If you suspect internal damage or moisture ingress, contact Cartell customer support for assistance. They may require detailed meter readings for diagnosis.
