3. Setup Instructions

3.1 Mounting the Cord Reel

  1. Choose Location: Select a suitable location for mounting, ensuring it is within reach of a grounded power outlet and provides adequate clearance for the cord reel's 180-degree swivel.
  2. Prepare Mounting Surface: Ensure the mounting surface (e.g., wall, ceiling) is sturdy enough to support the weight of the cord reel and the forces applied during cord extension and retraction.
  3. Mark Drill Holes: Use the steel swivel bracket as a template to mark the positions for drilling. Alternatively, create a template from cardboard by tracing the bracket and marking the holes.
  4. Drill Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes appropriate for your mounting hardware.
  5. Install Mounting Bolts: Insert mounting bolts into the pilot holes, leaving them slightly loose.
  6. Attach Bracket: Slide the swivel bracket over the bolt heads.
  7. Secure Unit: Tighten the mounting bolts with a wrench until the unit is securely fastened. Ensure the reel can swivel freely.

3.2 Connecting to Power

Plug the cord reel's lead-in cord into a standard 3-prong, 125VAC grounded electrical outlet.

3.3 Smart Feature Setup (Wi-Fi Connectivity)

To utilize the smart features, connect the cord reel to your Wi-Fi network and integrate it with compatible smart home platforms.

  1. Download App: Download the 'Smart Life' app (or other compatible app like Alexa or Google Home) on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Register/Login: Create an account or log in to the app.
  3. Enter Pairing Mode: The specific method to enter pairing mode may vary. Typically, you will press and hold one of the buttons on the end of the electrical plug (not a reset button on the main unit) until an indicator light flashes rapidly. Refer to the app's instructions for precise pairing steps.
  4. Add Device: In the app, select 'Add Device' or the '+' icon, then choose 'Electrical Outlet' or 'Smart Plug'.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi: Follow the in-app prompts to connect the device to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. (5GHz networks are not supported).
  6. Integrate with Voice Assistants: Once connected to the Smart Life app, you can link your Smart Life account to Alexa or Google Home through their respective apps to enable voice control.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Extending the Cord

  1. Grasp the end of the cord (the triple tap connector).
  2. Slowly pull the cord out to the desired length. The internal ratcheting mechanism will lock the cord in place.
  3. For optimal use and to avoid constant tugging, it is recommended to pull the cord out completely to the red taped end before use, especially when working around corners or obstructions.

4.2 Retracting the Cord

  1. Grasp the cord and pull it slightly further out (approximately 1-2 inches) to disengage the locking mechanism.
  2. Allow the cord to slowly retract into the reel. Guide the cord with your hand to ensure it retracts smoothly and without tangling. The Slow Retraction Technology (SRT) will manage the speed.

4.3 Using the Outlets

The cord reel features three AC outlets on the triple tap connector.

Manual Control:

  • Each outlet has an individual button on the triple tap connector. Press the button to toggle power to that specific outlet. An indicator light will show its status.

Smart Control (via App/Voice Assistant):

  • Once connected to your smart home system (e.g., Smart Life, Alexa, Google Home), you can control each outlet independently or together using the app or voice commands.
  • Set up schedules, timers, or routines within the app to automate power to connected devices.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your cord reel.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe down the cord reel casing and cable with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the unit is unplugged before cleaning.
  • Outlet Protection: Keep the button caps on the AC outlets closed when not in use to protect them from dust, debris, and moisture.
  • Cable Inspection: Regularly inspect the entire length of the cord for any signs of damage, cuts, fraying, or excessive wear. If damage is found, discontinue use immediately and replace the cord reel.
  • Mounting Check: Periodically check the mounting bolts to ensure they remain tight and secure.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, ensure the cord is fully retracted and the unit is stored in a clean, dry place.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your AlphaWorks Cord Reel Extension, refer to the following troubleshooting guide.

6.1 No Power to Outlets

  • Check Main Power: Ensure the cord reel's lead-in cord is securely plugged into a live, grounded electrical outlet.
  • Reset Breaker: Check if the cord reel's internal circuit breaker has tripped. If so, unplug all devices, wait a few minutes, and then press the reset button on the cord reel.
  • Individual Outlet Buttons: Verify that the individual power buttons on the triple tap connector are pressed in (indicator light on) for the desired outlets.
  • Overload: Reduce the total wattage of devices connected to the cord reel to ensure it does not exceed the 1625W rating.

6.2 Difficulty with Cord Retraction

  • Pull Slightly: Pull the cord out an additional 1-2 inches to ensure the locking mechanism is fully disengaged before allowing it to retract.
  • Guide Cord: Always guide the cord manually during retraction to prevent kinks or tangles that could impede the mechanism.
  • Obstructions: Check for any obstructions around the cord entry point or along the cable itself.

6.3 Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues

  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi: Ensure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal and your phone is connected to it during setup. The device does not support 5GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Correct Pairing Button: Confirm you are using the correct button on the triple tap connector to initiate pairing mode, not a general reset button on the main reel unit.
  • Router Distance: Ensure the cord reel is within range of your Wi-Fi router (up to 320 feet line of sight).
  • App Instructions: Double-check the specific pairing instructions within the Smart Life app, as steps can sometimes vary.
  • Router Settings: Temporarily disable any VPNs or firewalls on your router that might interfere with device discovery.

6.4 Loose or Unresponsive Outlets

  • If an outlet feels loose or does not accept a plug, or if the smart functionality fails for individual outlets, this may indicate internal damage. In such cases, discontinue use and contact customer support.
