1. Introduction
The BAKER Digital Vernier Caliper ED-30 is a precision measuring instrument designed for accurate dimensional measurements in various industrial and scientific applications. It features a digital display for easy reading and offers measurements in both metric (millimeters) and imperial (inches) units. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your digital caliper.
2. Safety Precautions
- Always handle the caliper with care to avoid dropping or impacting it, which can affect its accuracy.
- Keep the caliper clean and free from dust, dirt, and moisture.
- Do not apply excessive force when taking measurements.
- Store the caliper in its protective case when not in use to prevent damage.
- Avoid exposing the caliper to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.

- External Measuring Jaws: Used for measuring external dimensions.
- Internal Measuring Jaws: Used for measuring internal dimensions.
- Depth Rod: Extends from the end of the beam for depth measurements.
- Step Measuring Faces: Used for measuring step dimensions.
- Digital Display: Shows the measurement reading.
- ON/OFF Button: Powers the unit on or off.
- ZERO Button: Sets the display to zero at any position.
- mm/inch Button: Toggles between metric (mm) and imperial (inch) units.
- ABS Button: Toggles between absolute and incremental measurement modes.
- Locking Screw: Secures the sliding jaw in position.
- Thumb Roller: Allows for fine adjustment of the sliding jaw.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The BAKER Digital Caliper ED-30 typically uses a SR44 or LR44 button cell battery. If the display is blank or shows a low battery indicator, replace the battery:
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the digital unit.
- Slide the cover open or unscrew it, depending on the design.
- Remove the old battery.
- Insert a new battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
4.2 Initial Cleaning
Before first use, gently wipe the measuring surfaces and the beam with a clean, lint-free cloth. Ensure no dust or debris is present, as this can affect measurement accuracy.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off and Zero Setting
- Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the caliper.
- Close the measuring jaws completely and ensure they are clean.
- Press the ZERO button. The display should read "0.00" (mm) or "0.000" (inch). This sets the absolute zero point.
- To turn off, press the ON/OFF button again. The caliper may also have an auto-off feature after a period of inactivity.
5.2 Unit Conversion (mm/inch)
Press the mm/inch button to switch between millimeter and inch readings at any time during measurement.
5.3 Absolute/Incremental Measurement (ABS)
The ABS button allows you to switch between absolute and incremental measurement modes:
- Absolute Mode: Measurements are taken from the true zero point (when jaws are closed and zeroed).
- Incremental Mode: You can set a temporary zero point at any position. Subsequent measurements will be relative to this new zero. Press ABS to toggle back to absolute mode.
5.4 Taking Measurements
Always ensure the caliper is clean and zeroed before taking measurements.
- External Measurement: Place the object between the external measuring jaws. Gently close the jaws until they make firm contact with the object. Read the value on the digital display.
- Internal Measurement: Insert the internal measuring jaws into the opening of the object. Open the jaws until they make firm contact with the inner surfaces. Read the value.
- Depth Measurement: Place the end of the beam on the top surface of the object. Extend the depth rod into the hole or recess until it touches the bottom. Read the value.
- Step Measurement: Place the step measuring face of the fixed jaw on the higher surface. Extend the sliding jaw until its step measuring face rests on the lower surface. Read the value.
For consistent readings, use the thumb roller for fine adjustments and the locking screw to hold the measurement if needed.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
- After each use, wipe the entire caliper with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.
- Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the display or measuring surfaces.
- Ensure no liquid enters the electronic components.
6.2 Storage

Figure 6.1: The BAKER Digital Vernier Caliper ED-30 stored securely in its protective hard case.
- Store the caliper in its original protective case when not in use.
- Keep it in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, dust, and extreme temperatures.
- Slightly open the jaws before storing to relieve tension on the measuring surfaces.
6.3 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 4.1 for battery replacement instructions when the display indicates low power or becomes erratic.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Display is blank or flickering. | Low or dead battery. | Replace the battery (refer to Section 4.1). |
| Inaccurate readings. | Dirt/debris on measuring surfaces; Caliper not zeroed; Damage to the caliper. | Clean measuring surfaces; Re-zero the caliper; If damage is suspected, contact service. |
| Display shows "E" or error code. | Electronic malfunction; Excessive movement speed. | Turn off and on again; Move the slider more slowly; If persistent, replace battery or contact service. |
| Slider is stiff or sticky. | Dirt on the beam; Lack of lubrication. | Clean the beam thoroughly; Apply a very thin layer of light machine oil if recommended by manufacturer (check product specific guidelines). |
