The Behringer Crave is a compact yet powerful analog synthesizer designed for both beginners and experienced users. Its semi-modular architecture allows for extensive sound design possibilities through its patch matrix. Key components include a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), voltage-controlled filter (VCF), envelope generator, low-frequency oscillator (LFO), and a built-in 32-step sequencer.

Setup

1. Unpacking and Inspection

  • Carefully remove the synthesizer from its packaging.
  • Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during transit. If damage is found, contact your dealer immediately.
  • Ensure all included components are present: the Crave synthesizer unit and power supply.

2. Power Connection

  • Connect the supplied power adapter to the DC IN jack on the rear panel of the Crave.
  • Plug the power adapter into a suitable electrical outlet.
  • The POWER LED on the front panel will illuminate when the unit is powered on.

3. Audio Connections

  • For headphone monitoring, connect 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo headphones to the PHONES output.
  • For line-level output to a mixer or audio interface, connect a 1/4" (6.35mm) TS cable from the VCA/LINE OUT jack to your desired input.

4. MIDI Connections

  • To control the Crave via an external MIDI device, connect a standard 5-pin MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT of your controller to the MIDI IN jack on the Crave.
  • To send MIDI data from the Crave (e.g., sequencer notes), connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT/THRU jack to the MIDI IN of another device.

Operating Instructions

1. Oscillator (VCO)

The OSCILLATOR (VCO) section generates the primary sound source. Adjust the FREQUENCY knob to set the base pitch. The PULSE WIDTH knob controls the width of the pulse wave, altering its timbre. The SHAPE switch selects between sawtooth and pulse waveforms. The MOD SOURCE knob determines the source and intensity of modulation for the VCO, with options like ENV/OSC MODE and LFO.

2. Filter (VCF)

The FILTER (VCF) section shapes the tone of the sound. The CUTOFF knob sets the filter's cutoff frequency, while RESONANCE emphasizes frequencies around the cutoff. The VCF MOD knob controls the amount of modulation applied to the filter. The MODE switch selects between LO (low-pass) and HI (high-pass) filter modes. The MOD SOURCE and MOD DEST controls allow for flexible routing of modulation signals to the filter.

3. Envelope (ENV)

The ENVELOPE section shapes the amplitude (volume) or other parameters over time. It features standard ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) controls. ATTACK sets the time for the sound to reach its peak volume. DECAY sets the time for the sound to fall from peak to sustain level. SUSTAIN sets the level at which the sound holds while a key is pressed. The SUSTAIN ON/OFF switch enables or disables the sustain stage. The MOD POLARITY (POS/NEG) determines the direction of the envelope's effect.

4. Modulation (LFO)

The MODULATION section features a Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO) for adding movement and vibrato to your sounds. Adjust the LFO RATE to control the speed of the oscillation. The SHAPE switch allows selection between different LFO waveforms (e.g., triangle, square).

5. Utility

The UTILITY section includes controls for GLIDE (portamento), which smoothly transitions between notes, and VC MIX, which blends different voltage control signals.

6. Output (VCA)

The OUTPUT (VCA) section controls the overall volume of the synthesizer. The VOLUME knob adjusts the output level. The VCA MODE switch selects between envelope-controlled (ENV) or always-on (ON) VCA operation.

7. Sequencer

The SEQUENCER allows you to program and play back musical sequences. Use the TEMPO/GATE LENGTH knob to adjust the playback speed and gate duration. Buttons like HOLD/REST, RESET/ACCENT, ARP SET END, and PATTERN BANK are used for programming and managing sequences. The OCTAVE/LOCATION LEDs indicate the current step or octave. PLAY/STOP and REC buttons control sequence playback and recording. The SWING knob adds a rhythmic feel to the sequence.

Maintenance

  • Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not expose the unit to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and do not block any vents.
  • Disconnect power when not in use for extended periods.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound:
    • Check all audio connections.
    • Ensure the VOLUME knob is turned up.
    • Verify that the VCA MODE is set to ON or that the envelope is triggering correctly.
    • Check patch cable connections if using the patch matrix.
  • No Power:
    • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the unit and the power outlet.
    • Verify the power outlet is functional.
  • MIDI Not Responding:
    • Check MIDI cable connections.
    • Ensure the MIDI channel settings on the Crave and your external device match.
