2. General Safety Information

Always follow basic safety precautions when using power tools to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and serious personal injury.

  • Work Area Safety: Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection. Use safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield. Wear hearing protection when operating noisy tools. Dress properly; do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. Disconnect the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
  • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw. Keep your body and arm positioned to allow you to resist kickback forces.

4.2. Battery Insertion

The DEWALT DCS571N is a bare unit and requires an 18V DEWALT XR Lithium-Ion battery (sold separately).

  1. Align the battery pack with the battery port on the saw handle.
  2. Slide the battery pack into the port until it clicks securely into place.
  3. To remove the battery, press the release button on the battery pack and slide it out.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Starting and Stopping the Saw

The saw features a two-stage trigger for safety.

  1. To start: Push the safety lock-off button (usually located near the trigger) and then depress the trigger switch.
  2. To stop: Release the trigger switch. The blade will stop quickly due to the electric brake.

5.2. Adjusting Cutting Depth

Adjust the cutting depth to be slightly deeper than the material being cut (approximately 1/8 inch or 3mm deeper) to ensure a clean cut and reduce strain on the motor.

  1. Loosen the depth adjustment lever.
  2. Raise or lower the saw base to achieve the desired cutting depth.
  3. Tighten the depth adjustment lever securely.

5.3. Adjusting Bevel Angle

The saw can make angled cuts up to 50 degrees.

  1. Loosen the bevel adjustment lever.
  2. Tilt the saw base to the desired angle, indicated on the bevel scale.
  3. Tighten the bevel adjustment lever securely.

5.4. Cutting Techniques

Always ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before cutting. Use a straight edge or guide for accurate cuts.

  • Straight Cuts: Align the saw's sight line with your cutting mark. Start the saw before engaging the material and maintain a steady, consistent feed rate.
  • Angled Cuts: Set the desired bevel angle. Be aware that the effective cutting depth will be reduced at angles other than 90 degrees.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your tool.

  • Cleaning: Keep the tool's ventilation slots clean to prevent overheating. Regularly remove sawdust and debris from the blade guard and base plate. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Blade Inspection: Periodically inspect the saw blade for sharpness, cracks, or missing teeth. Replace dull or damaged blades immediately.
  • Battery Care: Store battery packs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store discharged batteries for extended periods.
  • General Inspection: Check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Ensure all moving parts operate smoothly.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your saw, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Saw Not Starting: Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly inserted. Check that the safety lock-off button is fully depressed before pulling the trigger.
  • Poor Cut Quality/Slow Cutting: The blade may be dull or dirty. Replace or clean the blade. Ensure the cutting depth is set correctly.
  • Excessive Vibration: Check if the blade is properly installed and secured. Inspect the blade for damage or warping.
  • Overheating: Ensure ventilation slots are clear of debris. Avoid forcing the saw through material; maintain a consistent feed rate.
